Mel Greig 'attacked' over sugar daddy tell-all: 'Don't care'

Mel Greig has opened up about the backlash she's received from men after sharing her 'disturbing' experience on a 'Sugar Daddy' dating website.

In an opinion piece for 9Honey, the radio and TV personality revealed she'd signed up to a site that links wealthy men with typically younger women (aka 'Sugar Babies') for a 'mutually beneficial' relationship.

'Attacked'

The idea is that sugar babies receive cash, gifts or other benefits in exchange for being in a romantic relationship with their sugar daddy benefactor. But that wasn't what Mel encountered — instead, she was confronted with men whose sole aim was to pay women for sex.

Now, Mel tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she's received multiple angry messages from male social media users since her story was published.

"I'm getting attacked by so many pathetic men because it's obviously hit a nerve," she says.

"But I don't care, women need to be made aware."

'Missing the point'

Mel says some of the comments criticised her looks, saying she's supposedly "too old and fat or not pretty enough" to be a sugar baby.

She shared one private Facebook message she received from a man who questioned why she was surprised by the treatment she received on the site.

"What were your expectations exactly in joining a sugar daddy website?

"Was the thought process something like, 'Oh, I want stuff and these men will just give me stuff for no reason whatsoever?'"

Mel says messages like these are an example of 'men missing the point' of her decision to share her story.

"I went onto the site out of curiosity to see how dating a sugar daddy would work, I'm well aware that there would be intimacy," she explains.

"What I wasn't aware of was the lack of respect and regard for women's rights."

'Big problem'

Mel says she came across hundreds of sugar daddy profiles that displayed lists of "one-sided degrading sexual demands" without regard for what a woman might feel comfortable with or consent to.

"Men were literally saying things like 'I don't care if you don't want to talk,' 'Just pretend you like it' and 'If I'm paying I'll do what I want to you'," she reveals.

One sugar daddy was offering to pay a sugar baby $300 for three hours in which he could 'do whatever he wanted'.

"They feel because they have something to offer a woman in the terms of finances or gifts that they can do whatever they like and that was their 'right'.

"For a man to look at a woman as a sexual vessel to do whatever he wants to in a presumptuous way is a big problem."

In Mel's opinion, this 'disturbing' power imbalance puts sugar babies in a 'worrying situation'.

"I have a genuine fear for vulnerable women during this pandemic that might actually take one of these pigs up on their offer.

"Why couldn't they write in their profiles, 'Would love to catch up and see where we go from there?' or to start a god damn conversation at least?"

Needless to say, Mel quickly deleted her profile from the sugar daddy site.
