MasterChef's Rue reacts to worldwide success of her BarbeRue sauce

EXCLUSIVE: Rue spills on her future plans after the cooking competition.

Despite being sent home just a few weeks before the finale, Rue Mupedzi walked away from this year’s season of MasterChef Australia with one of the biggest prizes the show has ever seen.

The 30-year-old oral health therapist won an immunity challenge earlier this month which saw her smokey, sweet and spicy BBQ sauce being sold in Coles across Australia - a first for the cooking competition.

Rue tells Yahoo Lifestyle that that it feels “absolutely amazing” having one of the country’s biggest supermarkets stocking her product, which she titled ‘BarbeRue sauce’.

“It's been really well received, which is really great to see,” she says. “And honestly, I'm just really proud of myself for doing something that has ended up in Coles.

“I have to say that's probably the proudest moment for me in the competition. That was like the cherry on top of the experience.”

Rue went on to share that she has received “so many messages” from viewers around the world hoping to buy her product.

“I think I’ve gotten a few messages from Germany, Ireland, Scotland, some people from Morocco, some people from the Philippines, the UK,” she details. “Everyone’s like, ‘We would love to try this sauce, can you tell us it’s coming to our country?’.

“And you know what? Maybe that is something I should think about, something that could be a possibility. I don't know, but that would be an absolute dream come true.”

'Made me believe in myself so much more'

After finishing the cooking competition in seventh place, Rue says she has walked away from MasterChef with so much more confidence in herself and her culinary skills.

“When I went on the show I was just like, ‘Oh I’m definitely going to be the first person to go’,” she admits. “And with every elimination, even if the judges said they were really proud, on the inside I was always like, ‘I’m going to go home’. And you can see with the challenges I did really well in, I was genuinely surprised. I’d be like, ‘Wait, are you sure?’.

“So I have to say, being there made me believe in myself so much more. It’s opened my mind up to the world of food, and it’s opened my mind up to possibilities that are there for me - like, a product in Coles was never on my list.”

Moving forward, Rue is “really focused” on gaining more experience in the food industry and working with pastry.

“I have absolutely fallen in love with pastry over the last year and a half, so I would love to maybe get a bit of work experience in pastry and probably one day come up with a cookbook so I can show people that it doesn’t have to be too hard,” she says.

“Also, I do have a small business that I run where I sell macarons, so I am grateful to be continuing that and hopefully things just get bigger.”
