MAFS' Adrian responds to comments he and Awhina were 'set up to fail'
EXCLUSIVE: Adrian Araouzou reveals what he really thinks about Awhina Rutene having a son.
Married At First Sight’s Adrian Araouzou has responded to comments that he and his ‘wife’ Awhina Rutene have been “set up to fail” because they live on opposite sides of the country. Many fans took to social media following their wedding last week to cast doubt on their future as Awhina lives in Perth with her twin sister, her son and her son’s father, while Adrian lives in Sydney and also has a twin.
“How is this going to work after the show finishes?” one viewer commented. “I doubt a twin will leave the other behind, and Awhina’s son’s father lives in Perth. They’re set up to fail beyond the show.”

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle, Adrian insists that he entered the experiment open to moving states if he found ‘the one’ because “love is a powerful thing”.
“Love moves mountains. So when you fall in love, those big issues don't become so big,” he shares. “At the end of the day, I've lived in different states to my brother. My brother lives in a different state right now and when we were filming for the show he was in Melbourne. We’re not side by side all day every day, so for us, it wasn't an issue.
“I think it would be more of an issue for Awhina to be away from her sister, but I would never have expected that because she has her son and her son's father is in Perth. So I knew that the situation from that point onwards was about me moving, not her because I wouldn't want to move Awhina away from her son or her son away from his dad.”
Adrian unpacks wedding bombshell
Adrian had quite a strong reaction when he found out on his wedding day that Awhina was a mum, admitting that he didn’t know if it was something he was comfortable with as he has always wanted to “have that first with someone”.
He tells Yahoo Lifestyle he was definitely “blindsided” by the bombshell, which came out during Awhina’s mum’s speech, and felt “overwhelmed” because he didn’t sign up to the reality show to become a step-father.
“It was a lot to process at the time. It’s not ideal because one, I haven’t met the father. I’m sure when that time comes, that will happen. But also, am I even ready to be a dad?” he says. “It was just a lot process in that moment, especially when you’ve got cameras on you, you’ve got your family and friends, her family and friends. It was just an overwhelming day.”
Surprising moment that didn't air on TV
While he had quite a strong reaction to Awhina’s bombshell at the wedding, Adrian reveals he had a lot more to say about the situation than what was shown on TV.
“[The producers] were asking about the kid situation and I said in my voxie, my sister is a mum and she's married, but if she was to become single, anyone would be lucky to have her and her son,” he details.

“So I thought that was a reasonable response, and that's where my head was at towards the end of the night. And also I did mention that my mum is a single mum of four kids, so I did think they could’ve emphasised that a little bit more so people could understand me a bit more.”
