Lucy Liu doesn't regret confronting Bill Murray amid “Charlie's Angels” clash: 'I am going to protect myself'
The actress stood her ground during an on-set incident with the actor, who began to "hurl insults" at her.
Lucy Liu has no regrets about standing up for herself, 25 years after her on set clash with Bill Murray.
The actress — who appeared alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore in Charlie's Angels — was just breaking out in Hollywood thanks to Ally McBeal, when she had an uncomfortable encounter with fellow costar, Murray. Liu has since been outspoken about how Murray insulted her, using language that was "inexcusable and unacceptable," which led to her calling him on it. Reflecting on the incident now, Liu stands by her decision to speak out.
"I really didn’t think about it," she recently told The Guardian, noting that she wasn't going to let her status dictate her ability to stand her ground. "I would have done that in any situation. I think when I sense something is not right, I am going to protect myself. It’s an innate thing to do if you feel there’s injustice, and I always feel that way.”

Liu added that she is not the sort of person who can keep quiet or simply let things slide.
"If I was, it would have been a much easier road," she admitted. "But because I’ve never been that person, we had to find a way."

Liu spoke about the incident in 2021, during an interview with the Los Angeles Times' Asian Enough podcast that came not long after a tweet about the alleged interaction resurfaced.
"I won't get into the specifics, but it kept going on and on. I was, like, 'Wow, he seems like he's looking straight at me,'" Liu recalled, explaining that she eventually asked Murray point-blank if he was talking to her. She said it eventually became "a one-on-one communication."
Liu then stood up for herself when the actor began to “hurl insults” in her direction. "No matter how low on the totem pole you may be or wherever you came from, there's no need to condescend or to put other people down," she argued. "And I would not stand down, and nor should I have."

Liu went on to say that she has since crossed paths with Murray and had amicable conversations — but certainly doesn't regret pushing back during the argument.
"I'm not going to sit there and be attacked," she said. "I don't want to be that person that is not going to speak up for myself and stand by the only thing that I have, which is my dignity and self-respect."
Barrymore, who was also a producer on the 2000 film, later praised her costar for handling the situation so well, saying, "Lucy stood up for herself, and that was the great thing that came out of an unfortunate circumstance. She literally said, 'I do not accept that kind of behavior from you.' And we all supported her and backed her up, and we moved forward."

As for Murray, he gave his side of the story to the Times of London back in 2009 and has not commented since.
"Look, I will dismiss you completely if you are unprofessional and working with me," Murray said. "When our relationship is professional, and you're not getting that done, forget it."
