The Block's Scott Cam breaks silence after 'toxic' drama takes over

The Block host Scott Cam has finally spoken out about the drama on this year’s season of the renovation series, which some viewers have described as ‘toxic’.

The Gold-Logie winner has admitted he was surprised by how the contestants turned against each other during filming, telling TV WEEK it’s been “an unusual year for personality clashes”.

“New personalities came out in different people that they didn't show us in their interview,” he shared. “Some drama happens and you go, ‘Wow, I didn't see that coming from that person’.”

Scott went on to say that although fans have complained about the amount of drama this season, with some people even stopping him on the street to air their grievances, the producers aren’t involved in orchestrating fights between teams.

“We don't create the drama,” he explained. “We never know what's going to happen. It's all happy days in the first week, but the nature of our show is it's a crockpot and a bubbling mess where everyone is lacking sleep from day one. Things just implode.”

He added that he doesn’t believe the explosive drama between the cast members this season will overshadow their impressive renovations.

“The construction comes first, the real estate second and the drama third,” he said.

“It's up to the contestants how they manage that throughout the process, but I like to remind them [being on The Block] is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and to not go through it fighting the whole time. Enjoy it.”

Kristy and Brett reveal their surprising strategy

Scott’s comments come shortly after Kristy and Brett revealed that they had a plan to cause drama and “ruffle some feathers” from the moment they applied for the show.

“Originally when we applied I was like, the last few seasons I’ve found boring,” Brett told KIIS 101.1’s Jase & Lauren. “I just thought it would be interesting to bring in someone that wanted to do that and stir the pot and get in a bit of trouble. That was in our audition video.”

The controversial duo, who have been accused by viewers of “bullying” their competitors, were asked during the interview if they would do anything differently if they had their time again.

“It’s probably the wrong answer, but probably not,” Kristy admitted, while Brett said you would “never” hear them complain about their ‘edit’.

“We’re people that are gonna own it and lean into it,” he explained. “We did come in to ruffle feathers to stir the pot, so to get this response means that we did what we came to do.”
