The Block's Darren Palmer reveals hidden side of the judging viewers don't see

Darren Palmer has silenced critics of the judging on The Block this year.

The Block judge Darren Palmer has revealed some behind-the-scenes secrets about the judging process on the show, which might leave viewers shocked.

This year, the judges have come up against some harsh criticism online over their 'inconsistent' marks on room reveal night, with one person on Reddit claiming "they don’t hold each house to the same expectations or objective and contradict themselves at every turn".

Now, in an Instagram Q&A, interior designer Darren Palmer has revealed that the judges actually spend a lot of time in the rooms before handing down their final score.

One viewer asked Darren: "Do you ever change your mind on a room when watching it on TV?"

Darren silenced all the judging criticism by replying: "No, we give it a thorough assessment on the day. Around 40 minutes in each room and a lot covered we don't see on TV."

Another viewer asked Darren why House 5 came bottom of the board last night when their backyard was revealed.

He responded: "Certainly not because they didn't try or work hard or put every effort in. A little contrasting softness in materials would have helped a lot I think. They have a north-facing backyard with a plungie so the backyard will have buyers interest."

Darren Palmer 'does not condone bullying'

Back in August, Darren slammed the ‘toxic behaviour’ fans have claimed to witness on the show this year.

In a candid Q&A on his Instagram account following the master suite room reveals, the 45-year-old judge distanced himself from what has been playing out on screens.

When asked by a follower what he thinks of the ‘behaviour from House 2 and 3 on The Block this year’, Darren didn’t mince his words.

He replied: “It’s fortunate we don’t hear about or see anything that happens during the week. Keeps judging fair and subjective. I do not condone bullying.”

The Block viewers turn off

Die-hard fans of The Block have slammed this year’s season of the reality series for focusing too much on the contestants’ “toxic behaviour” rather than their renovations.

Taking to Reddit, one viewer shared that the show’s constant negativity and “bullying” amongst the cast is becoming more and more difficult to watch.

“I don’t mind a bit of drama, it’s a reality show so I get there might be some sparks, but every single episode there’s toxic behaviour, snarky comments and bullying and it's kind of bringing me down,” they wrote.

“I don’t feel good after watching The Block anymore and that’s a shame because this is usually my comfort show. I hope it gets better as the season goes on.”

Others agreed that the drama is “tiring” and they prefer to watch the show online so they have the ability to “skip through all the toxicity”.
