As many Kmart shoppers would know, it’s not unusual to purchase an item from the retail store and use it for a completely different purpose than intended. From transforming a tablecloth into curtains to using a yoga mat as shelf liners, caravan owners are perhaps the most creative when it comes to repurposing Kmart products.

One social media user took to Facebook to share their ‘hack’ for using Kmart’s $5.50 12-pack of storage containers to store herbs and spices in their caravan. She also purchased Kmart’s 96-pack of pantry labels for $2 to mark the clear containers, which are designed to hold sewing accessories, craft supplies and stationery.

The post was quickly flooded with supportive comments from people praising the “awesome idea”, with one person writing: “Now that’s a clever hack. Love it.”

“I have done the same thing, perfect storage for spices,” another added, while a third said, “Love this! I’m going to do this also!”

“I have done this for when we travel in our caravan,” someone else replied, followed by a different user who commented, “I have these as well. They work well for me”.

While plenty of shoppers praised the “clever” storage solution, many people pointed out that the containers aren’t designed to store food products and might not be food safe.

“Looks really good and a great idea but sorry unless they are food safe I wouldn’t use them (I worked in food industry),” one person commented.

“Just be mindful they are not food grade. I’ve got the same and just ordered silicone food mason jars to replace them,” someone else shared, with another writing, “I have done this too, was pointed out to me about them not being food safe on a few sites (whoops), but I’m sticking with them till I find a food safe version”.

It’s important to note that the storage containers are made out of polystyrene, which regulatory bodies around the world including the US Food and Drug Administration and The European Food Safety Authority have said is safe for food service packaging.
