There are many things I can’t let go of. I know, I know, it’s not good to hold onto things, but in this case, I’m talking about summer fashion things, not life things! I miss my summer dresses so much, and while I’m sure there’s a way to make them work in the winter, I don’t think I want to try. I also dearly miss being able to step outside of my apartment without layering. The drill: sweater, then coat, then scarf, then hat. Ugh. But, it seems I’m not the only one who doesn’t want to let go of summery staples yet—or, well, ever. Katie Holmes is just like me.

The actress stepped out in New York City, with two Venti Starbucks drinks in hand—yet again. For the chilly Big Apple outing, Holmes layered up, starting the base of her look with light-wash, straight-leg jeans that had a subtly cropped silhouette. She paired said denim with a white turtleneck sweater, a black, double-breasted peacoat, oversized sunglasses, a tote bag, and her trusty black handbag. The stealing style moment, however, was that flats-with-socks combo.

Holmes didn’t go with the usual cold-weather shoe, like boots or Uggs or even sneakers. Instead, she slipped into her go-to Mary Jane ballet flats that she basically wore all of 2024. It’s a shoe more suitable for the summertime, but clearly also works in the wintertime—with the addition of one simple style staple.

The actress slipped into a pair of strappy white Mary Jane flats with a subtle pointed toe. Given the cold temperatures in NYC, Holmes paired the shoes with a simple pair of black ankle socks—a style move I really never would have thought of, given the no-no nature of socks-and-sandals. That said, celebs these days are wearing cute, frilly socks with anything, and clearly, it works in this case. I’m obsessed with Holmes’s Mary Janes-and-socks look, and I plan on wearing the combo stat.

Mary Janes are also showing zero signs of going away anytime soon. The silhouette dominated all of 2023 and 2024, made plenty of appearances on runways, and celebs of all ages have shown an affinity for it. While it’s inherently a warm-weather shoe, Holmes proved it can work just as well in the wintertime—with the low-key addition of socks. And if the humble essential is enough to make a shoe work year-round, then you can best bet I’m working it into my outfits. Better yet, if I don’t have to let go of my favorite Mary Janes this time of year, I’m all in.

Given Holmes just reignited my need for a new pair of Mary Janes, I picked out some cute styles below. Shop them below, and get ready to wear them nonstop, literally.
