“Joker 2”, “Megalopolis”, “Borderlands” vie for worst of the year at 2025 Razzies

Sometimes it's not an honor just to be nominated.

The Golden Raspberry Awards, commonly known as the Razzies, have announced their nominations for 2024's worst films and filmmakers, with a five-way tie for the most (dis)honors per movie. The supervillain musical Joker: Folie à Deux, the costly passion project Megalopolis, the video game adaptation Borderlands, the superheroine flick Madame Web, and the presidential biopic Reagan each racked up six nominations, including Worst Picture.

Also scoring multiple nods were Unfrosted, Jerry Seinfeld's experiment in product placement, with four nominations, and director Rupert Sanders' ill-fated reboot of The Crow, with two.

Most of the nominations in categories for acting, writing, and directing flowed from the titles above. Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga were individually nominated for Worst Actor and Actress, and earned a nod together in the Screen Combo category for Folie à Deux. Cate Blanchett and Dakota Johnson were singled out for their lead performances in Borderlands and Madame Web, as were Seinfeld and Dennis Quaid for Unfrosted and Reagan.

Interestingly enough, the only performers to pick up individual acting nods from Megalopolis came in the Supporting Actor category: Shia Labeouf, who the nominating body was eager to point out performed part of his role in drag, and Jon Voight, whose four screen credits of 2024 were jointly listed (Megalopolis, Reagan, Shadow Land, and Strangers).

Reagan helmer Sean McNamara was the only director of one of the five most-nominated films to be spared a Worst Director nod, his spot being taken by Seinfeld for Unfrosted. Similarly, Borderlands scribes Eli Roth and Joe Crombie were the only members of the five to be overlooked for a Worst Screenplay nod, their spot being taken by the writing team behind Kraven the Hunter (Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk).

If you relied on Entertainment Weekly's picks for the five worst films of the year to place your bets on the 2025 Razzie nominations, you'd have done well this morning. Joker: Folie à Deux, Megalopolis, Madame Web, and Borderlands comprised four of EW's bottom five, with the Netflix YA drama Uglies taking the fifth and final place over the Razzies' choice, Reagan.
