"She tried really hard to make things work and is heartbroken," an insider tells PEOPLE about Lopez

"She was done waiting and the date she did it speaks a ton," says a source of Lopez, 55, who filed for divorce on Tuesday, Aug. 20, without a lawyer.
The move "gives her control of the process," adds the source. "It's good that she did it."

Another Lopez insider echoed the sentiment, underscoring that the superstar is ready to move on. "She tried really hard to make things work and is heartbroken," says the insider. "The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.”
The singer is mom to 16-year-old twins Max and Emme (with ex-husband Marc Anthony) and Affleck shares three children, Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12, with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
In her divorce filing, Lopez listed the couple's date of separation as April 26, 2024. She and Affleck, 52, legally married in July 2022 during a surprise wedding at A Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas just a few months following their April 2022 engagement.
“We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” Lopez wrote to fans in her July 17, 2022 On the JLo newsletter, referencing their first breakup in 2004.

It was a star-studded affair, drawing Affleck's pals Matt Damon and Kevin Smith, among others.
When sharing photos with fans, again through her newsletter, Lopez wrote of rekindling with Affleck, "Some old wounds were healed that day and the weight of the past finally lifted off our shoulders. Full-circle — and not at all the way we planned it. Better."
PEOPLE first reported in May that Affleck and Lopez were living apart. In the months since, the pair were rarely seen together and were photographed with and without their wedding bands.
