Australians are going wild on social media after an unofficial video for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign featuring one of Australia’s most iconic anthems has gone viral. The vice president announced last month that she will be running for the Democratic nomination after Joe Biden dropped out of the race, with the election set to take place in just over three months.

While the Harris for President campaign released its first official video on Thursday featuring Beyoncé’s 2016 song Freedom, an unofficial clip is currently circulating on X using John Farnham’s 1986 inspirational anthem ‘You’re the Voice’.

The video, posted by @politicsusa46, ties in remarkably well with Joe Biden’s televised address announcing he won’t be seeking re-election and will instead “pass the torch to the new generation”.

“I know there is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life,” he said. “There’s also a time and place for new voices, fresh voices, yes, younger voices. That time and place is now.”

The video has received enormous praise on social media since its release earlier this week, with many people describing it as “fantastic”, “outstanding” and “one of the best campaign ads I’ve seen so far”.

“As an Aussie, it's brilliant to see John Farnham and ‘You're the Voice’ being used in Kamala's ads. Fits perfectly,” one person wrote, while another added, “Wow! This song is practically our second national anthem Down Under”.

“I need all my American friends to know that the use of John Farnham's seminal classic ‘You're the Voice’ in this video immediately makes it the greatest political ad of all time,” a third replied.

“How good is this ad for #KamalaHarris' campaign? Featuring Australian John Farnham's iconic song ‘You're the Voice’ just makes it extra special,” someone else wrote, followed by a different user who said, “Awesome! As an Australian watching from Down Under it was nice to hear you use our beloved John Farnham’s song ‘You’re the Voice’. Very powerful”.

“This is so damn good… gave me goosebumps,” one fan commented, with another agreeing, “I actually got chills watching this”.

John Farnham’s ‘You’re the Voice’ was an immediate hit upon its release in 1986, becoming a top ten single in Australia, the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark and West Germany. Meanwhile, it became more well-known in the United States after the band Heart released a cover version in 1991.

The song was unofficially played at anti-lockdown protests in Melbourne during the COVID-19 pandemic - which John Farnham’s manager condemned - and was notably used to advocate for the ‘Yes’ campaign in the 2023 Australian Indigenous Voice referendum with John’s support.
