“Grotesquerie” first-look teaser unravels Niecy Nash-Betts, Travis Kelce's bats——— Ryan Murphy horror drama

"It's like a hole opened up in the world to the center of nothingness," says the Emmy winner as Detective Lois Tryon.

A first look at Ryan Murphy's other other horror drama arrived Thursday with a suitably wild and all-around bats--- teaser trailer.

It's not American Horror Story, it's not American Horror Stories, it's the first footage from Grotesquerie, a 10-episode new FX series that drops this September. The teaser is a symphony of deranged imagery: lots of crosses, a Satanic jigsaw puzzle, a serial killer pummeling victims with a hammer, a gnarly meat grinder, a neon-lit red-light district in a small town of religious fanatics, a swimming pool filled with boiling water, and more.

"I don't know how it started," star Niecy Nash-Betts says in the role of Detective Lois Tryon. "It's like a hole opened up in the world to the center of nothingness."

According to new plot details for Grotesquerie, the story tracks a series of heinous crimes that feel oddly personal to Lois, almost like something is taunting her. With very few leads, she accepts help from "Sister Megan" (Micaela Diamond), a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. Both characters have difficult backgrounds. Lois struggles with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care, and her own inner demons. Sister Megan has seen the worst of humanity, but she still believes in its capacity for good, while Lois fears the world is succumbing to evil.

"This killer is sermonizing, proselytizing, preaching," Sister Megan says. "To understand this monster, we have to decipher these murders."

FX also confirms Courtney B. Vance as Lois' husband Marshall Tryon, Lesley Manville as Nurse Redd, Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Father Charlie, and Raven Goodwin as Lois' daughter Merritt Tryon. Meanwhile, details on the role played by Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce are still being kept under wraps, though he does appear in the teaser trailer.
