Write a list (early)

It may seem obvious, but starting with a packing list is key to ensuring you have everything you need without overpacking. Begin your list at least a week before your departure date, allowing plenty of time to add any last-minute essentials, like your brother's special request Easter eggs.

Pick out your bags or suitcases

Decide what type of bag or suitcase you need for your trip the week before and get it out of the loft or hall cupboard immediately to check it’s in good shape. Photo: Antler Luggage

Don't leave bag selection until the last minute. Decide on the type of bag you'll need for your trip ahead of time, and make sure it's in good condition. You don't want any surprises the night before your trip, like discovering a broken handle on your suitcase from last year.

Use packing cubes

Packing cubes are a game-changer for staying organised while travelling. Sort your clothing into different cubes based on category, making unpacking a breeze upon arrival. They're also ideal for multi-stop trips and keeping your hotel room tidy.

Go easy on the shoes

Shoes can quickly eat up valuable suitcase space. Opt for versatile pairs that can serve multiple purposes, like boots suitable for both day trips and countryside walks.

Keep a wash bag ready-packed

If you’re a frequent traveller, always keep a beauty/essentials bag packed and ready to go. Photo: Antler Luggage

Save time by keeping a pre-packed wash bag with all your essential toiletries. This ensures you never forget important items like skincare, toothbrush, or contact lenses, and eliminates the need for last-minute packing.

Use mini organisers

Stay organised on the go with mini travel organisers for tech accessories and toiletries. Keep them in your hand luggage for easy access during your journey.

Careful with the house keys

Securely pack your house keys in a memorable location to avoid any mishaps. Consider using a bag with a built-in key clip or a designated pocket in your suitcase. Just remember to retrieve them before heading home!

Don't forget the snacks

Always pack some snacks. Train delays, excess traffic, the car breaking down, waking outside of a mealtime when on a long haul flight, and missing the chance to spontaneously eat out because France is closed on Sundays... there are endless reasons hunger can strike at an inopportune moment, and hangry travel is stressful all round. Keep an emergency stash of “dry” snacks like nuts or cereal bars that won’t go off if you forget they’re lurking in a dark corner of your hand luggage.
