The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards may be done and dusted for another year, but the annual awards show left viewers ecstatic as the final award of the night was announced. Hosts Dan and Eugene Levy - the stars and creators of the hit series Schitt's Creek - were joined on stage by two very special guests to present the award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

The comedic father and son duo welcomed Annie Murphy - who played Alexis Rose in the sitcom - but questioned why she was there. "Well they said the 'shining star' of Schitt's Creek was going to present the final award of the night," Murphy quipped.

"There's been a little confusion here, Annie," Eugene replied before he and Dan told Annie that the presenter was actually someone else from their TV family.

"So please welcome our favourite TV mom...Catherine O'Hara!" the trio then announced in unison.

"At least I had my Schitt's Creek reunion…," was another comment.

"OMG YES WAS WAITING FOR SCHITT'S CREEK REUNION!!!!," another excited fan shouted.

The surprise reunion was a bright spot in an awards show that many viewers had deemed 'boring.'

"Either I'm just tired but the Emmys are kinda boring this year...," one unimpressed viewer wrote on X.

"What a snooze fest of an Emmys, like the awards were great and I'm happy with most the results but just production wise the show was boring, especially after a home run of an Oscars it just felt so flat..no prerecords, no real bits..just some stage vignettes?," someone else commented.

Schitt's Creek ran for 6 seasons and ended in 2020 (and, truly, that was the worst thing that happened that year). The series follows the extremely wealthy Rose family, who lose all of their money and have to move out of their palatial mansion and start over in two tiny adjoining motel rooms in the titular town.

The series became a ratings juggernaut and was praised for its heartwarming storylines and representation of LGBTQIA+ love, winning 9 Emmys over the course of its run. The series also remains one of the most quoted and meme-able shows in recent history thanks to iconic lines such as Annie Murphy's 'ew, David!" and pretty much everything that Catherine O'Hara ever said as Moira Rose.

Perhaps the surprise reunion was best summed up on X by this one happy fan who simply wrote, "Welp. Off to restart Schitt's Creek."
