Did Nicole Kidman just signal the return of the power suit?
Nicole Kidman embraced her Babygirl boss status as she stepped onto the red carpet at the Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica last night.
While the actress has been favouring a typically feminine approach to dressing throughout the film's press tour and during other recent red-carpet appearances, the 57-year-old attended last night's event in a sartorial nod to the Eighties that embraced a more masculine take on tailoring.
Kidman wore a neatly tailored suit jacket by Saint Laurent, complete with shoulder pads, and matching high-waisted wide-leg trousers, which she styled with a blue and white striped shirt and black and white tie. The neutral colour scheme of the ensemble could have evoked mid-level accountancy firm, but the Babygirl actress and her stylist Jason Bolden ensured that the look channelled red-carpet sophistication rather than a desk-side demeanour.
While the tailored two-piece leaned into a more typically masculine silhouette, Kidman added her own feminine touches, with pieces of statement jewellery, including a pair of gold hoop earrings, Roberto Coin gold and diamond bracelet cuffs, and rings. She also chose to go for a heightened take on the workwear heel, opting for a pair of black patent leather stiletto slingbacks.
The actress' beauty look was achieved with the help of the celebrity hair stylist Chris Appleton, who styled it down in glamorous, bouncy waves, placing it in contrast to the sharp lines of her suit. For her make-up, the star went equally as soft, with a glowing base, warm brown eyes and a blush pink lipstick. Her make-up artist Kate Synnott credited Kidman's red-carpet luminosity to Vieve's Skin Dew, posting a picture of the product to her stories with the caption; "Tried a new skin glow for red carpet and loved it."
