Sonia Kruger and Chris Brown have had quite a mixed response from viewers throughout this year’s season of Dancing With The Stars, with some social media users describing them as “a match made in heaven” and others arguing that the Gold Logie winner is “too crude for television”.

An insider told Yahoo Lifestyle last month that Channel Seven has received “several complaints” about Sonia’s X-rated jokes - saying they were displeased with her “smutty innuendos” and “disgusting” comments - which forced editors to re-edit the pre-recorded series to be more family-friendly viewing.

While Sonia’s cheeky sense of humour may have turned a handful of fans away this season, Yahoo Lifestyle can reveal that she and Chris aren’t going anywhere. A production insider tells us that the duo are set to return next year as part of the former Channel 10 host’s lucrative three-year deal with the network.

“Sonia and Chris being put together on Dancing With The Stars is a really big investment from the network. Channel Seven always knew this was their first step and they have enjoyed watching them get to know each other on camera,” the source shares.

“By next year viewers will have forgotten what this show looked like before them. The audience always takes some time with adjustments to these long-running shows. Maybe they will tone some of the innuendos down and find a different rhythm, but that’s a conversation for the big bosses at Seven to have rather than the hosts.”

Sonia has yet to respond to viewers’ complaints about her bawdy sense of humour on the reality show, however, her former boss and close friend has now come forward in defence of the TV star. The insider tells Yahoo Lifestyle that Sonia has given little thought to the backlash and “those comments are not getting in the way of a good champagne at the end of the day”.

“One minute you're a Gold Logie winner and the next you are being pulled down a few notches. It’s very Australian!” they share. “It says more about our industry and our tall poppy syndrome - don’t you think?

“Sure the show’s format can be a little bawdy but that’s on brand. Dancing is a sexy industry and Sonia grew up in it - that humour is in her DNA.”

They also point out that as a TV presenter, Sonia is simply hired to do a job and “nobody follows the brief as well as she does”.

“Channel Seven would have had a dozen board meetings about what this season would look like and that is well before Sonia even picked up her microphone,” they add.

DWTS doesn’t take itself too seriously and I don’t think parents are as sensitive as what some viewers are claiming to be. I hope this doesn’t affect her chance of winning back-to-back Gold Logie because that would be unfair.”
