Emmy Awards: ‘Hacks’ Wins Comedy Series Prize As ‘The Bear’, ‘Shōgun’ & ‘Baby Reindeer’ Lead Field – Full List
Hacks was the surprise winner for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards tonight, its third triumph of the night. The HBO/Max show’s stunning triumph followed prizes for its Lead Actress Jean Smart and its writing team.
But it was a record-breaking Bear market for comedy tonight. FX’s The Bear won four awards and, combined with last weekend’s Creative Arts ceremonies, amassed 11 wins this year. That breaks its own record for Comedy Emmys in a single year after it scored 10 at the strike-delayed 75th anniversary show in January.

Meanwhile, FX’s Shōgun extended a record Emmy year, winning Outstanding Drama Series and three other trophies Sunday night to lead all programs. It amassed 18 Emmys, including its Creative Arts haul, to set a single-year record for programs. The series’ Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won their first career Emmys as respective Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series, becoming the second actor and first actress of Asian descent to win their categories, respectively. Earlier Sunday, Frederick E.O. Toye won Directing.
The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White nabbed his second consecutive Emmy as Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for the FX series, and the first award of the night went to Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who also scored a back-to-back Emmy as Supporting Actor. A little later, the show’s Liza Colón-Zayas won Supporting Actress on her first nom. Christopher Storer won again for directing The Bear, adding to last year’s wins for writing, directing and producing.

FX led all networks and platforms with nine wins tonight, giving it a personal best of 36 trophies across the Primetime and Creative Arts Emmys. Netflix and the combined HBO/Max were next with six each Sunday night. Apple TV+ was another multiple winner, with two.
Jodie Foster got her first career Emmy on Sunday, Lead Actress in a Limited Series for HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, and Baby Reindeer’s Richard Gadd took the Lead Actor prize after winning for writing the Netflix limited series. Baby Reindeer won six total Emmys this year, after grabbing two at the Creative Arts Emmys.
It also was a night for repeat winners, with Smart winning her sixth career Emmy and third Lead Actress in a Comedy nod for her Hacks role as Deborah Vance and HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver taking Scripted Variety Series. Elizabeth Debicki took her second Supporting Actress in a Drama Emmy for playing Princess Diana in the Netflix’s The Crown, and Billy Crudup also got his second Emmy as Supporting Actor in a Drama for Apple TV+’s The Morning Show.
Comedy Central’s The Daily Show added to its Emmy haul with a statuette for Outstanding Talk Series, which was accepted by once-a-week host Jon Stewart. Will Smith took his third career Emmy, this one for writing Apple TV+’s Slow Horses. In accepting, he said onstage, “First of all, relax — despite my name, I come in peace.”
Baby Reindeer Supporting Actress Jessica Gunning also won, on her first career nomination, and Steven Zaillian got his first Emmy on his seventh career nom, for directing the Netflix limited series Ripley. Alex Edelman also was a first-time winner for HBO’s Alex Edelman: Just for Us, which took Writing for a Variety Special.

Hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy, this was the second Emmys of 2024; the 75th anniversary awards were presented Jan. 15, after being delayed due to the impact of the Hollywood strikes. Statuettes were handed out in 25 categories, after 99 mostly below-the-line awards were presented during last weekend’s dual Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies. The list of Juried Emmy Awards, which were revealed last month, is here.
