What is 28 Years Later about?
Cillian Murphy had a star turn in 28 Days Later in 2002 as Jim, a bicycle messenger who wakes up from a coma to find London largely deserted and simultaneously overrun by zombies with a "rage virus," which is transmitted by blood and takes hold of victims almost instantly—and instead of shuffling aimlessly in search for human flesh to snack on, these zombies run. The film follows Jim and a small group of survivors on their journey to escape not just from the zombies, but also from the darkest corners of humanity that emerged from the crisis.
In the 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, NATO takes over Britain, and U.S. troops (led by a general played by Idris Elba) bring in survivors as settlers for certain safe zones. A man named Don (Robert Carlyle), his wife Alice (Catherine McCormack) and their children Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton) accidentally set off a domino of infections and chaos throughout Europe, though it's discovered that some people, including Andy, can be carriers of the rage virus without ever developing symptoms.
As for 28 Years Later, the official synopsis reads, "It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
Ralph Fiennes, who stars in 28 Years Later in an undisclosed role, revealed some more details from the plot to IndieWire in October 2024.
“Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother," he said. "He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.”
