After months of anticipation—and, okay, a lot of hilarious teasers—Christina Haack is going head-to-head with Tarek and Heather El Moussa in the new HGTV series The Flip Off. The rules are simple: Each team fixes up (and flips) a run-down property and whoever receives the largest return on investment wins. Throughout the series, judges, who are hand-selected by the stars, will swing by and assess various rooms of the house.
The competitive spirit might be at an all-time high—after all, some serious bragging rights are on the table here—but the unlikely trio is taking it in stride. When House Beautiful sat down with the stars of The Flip Off and asked what surprised them the most about working all together, they had the cheekiest responses. "That we actually collaborated for a change," Heather joked. "It was super fun," Christina quipped. "I think that's shocking."
All jokes aside, there is no drama between Christina, her ex-husband, and his new wife. Over the course of filming the new HGTV show, the trio has posted a lot of light-hearted TikToks poking fun at Christina and Heather's striking resemblance as well as Tarek's most annoying habits. Instead of letting commenters and Redditors have the last word, the trio is taking control of the narrative. They're in on the joke—and they're having fun.
In fact, many HGTV fans applaud their playful banter as a symbol of a healthy co-parenting relationship. So what's their secret? As Tarek told House Beautiful, it's putting family first. "We always put the kids first," he explains. "Through that, we were able to rebuild our friendship—and that really came because of Heather and Christina really getting along." "It would've been tough if we didn't like each other," Heather adds. "It would've been a whole different life."
Christina and Tarek's children Taylor and Brayden might be the top priority, but the exes also look out for each other. In a sneak peek of The Flip Off, Tarek is seen consoling Christina after she reveals that she split up with her now ex-husband Josh Hall, who was supposed to star alongside her in the series. Despite the divorce drama happening in real-time—Christina recently revealed she and Josh may be going to trial—the on-screen switch-up didn't affect her approach to The Flip Off.
"I wasn't relying on my partner to be this extremely amazing house flipper," she tells House Beautiful. "Basically, I was planning to do most of it myself with my team already. It made it a little bit easier because I [didn't] have to ask someone their opinion. It was just fun!"
