Cara Delevingne steps into Elton John's platforms for his 'Step Into Christmas' video

While Taron Egerton earned praise for his turn as Elton John in the 2019 biopic Rocketman, can he saunter down a runway in six-inch stilettos?

Cara Delevingne can and has, and now she's donned John's iconic drag just in time for the holidays. The model and actress plays the Rocketman in a new video for his perennial classic "Step Into Christmas."

Originally released in November 1973, with the similarly festive "Ho, Ho, Ho (Who'd Be a Turkey at Christmas)" as the B-side, the tune written by John and longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin peaked at No. 56 stateside, though it hit No. 1 on Billboard's Christmas Singles chart. The single was certified gold in 2021 by the Recording Industry Association of America.

John released a music video for "Step Into Christmas" when it first came out, but 50 years later, he decided to revisit the song, and its visual, with a little help from Delevingne.

"I saw Cara at Glastonbury last summer, and we talked about how much we’d love to work together if the right idea came up," John said in a statement. "She's hilarious to spend time with; we both have quite a self-deprecating sense of humor. When someone suggested the idea of her playing me in a riff on the 1973 'Step Into Christmas' video, I just thought it was the perfect opportunity. Thank God Cara thought the same because it came out great."

Meanwhile, Delevingne jumped at the chance to play "an idol of hers" and hopes he can return the favor.

"To say his music has had a deeply profound effect on me is an understatement," said Delevingne. "To be asked by him to PLAY him in this recreation was a dream that I didn’t know I had until it happened. Honestly, I wish I could pretend to be Elton every day. I hope that Elton may one day return the favor and agree to play me in my not-yet-developed, written, pitched, or funded biopic. Fingers crossed."

This isn't the first time the pop legend has recruited someone to play him in a music video. For a clip in his 2001 single "This Train Don't Stop There Anymore," John had Justin Timberlake portray him in all his '70s glory.
