Belle Gibson And Clive Rothwell's Real-Life Relationship Inspired 'Apple Cider Vinegar.' Here's Where They Stand Now
Netflix’s breakout series Apple Cider Vinegar tells the “true-ish” story of social media influencer Belle Gibson (Kaitlyn Dever), who falsely claims to cure her brain cancer with healthy living. But one of the most compelling characters is her partner Clive Rothwell (Succession's Ashley Zukerman), who takes care of Belle's son and even helps her financially throughout her scandal.
Belle Gibson is a real person who actually did pretend to have cancer, raising a lot of questions about what’s real and what’s fake in this story. But who is Clive, and are he and Belle still together? Here’s what to know.
Who is Clive Rothwell?
Like Belle Gibson, Clive Rothwell is a real person. In the series, fans see Clive help raise Belle’s son, whom she welcomed before the two started dating.
Not a lot is publicly known about Clive, but Belle has shared a little. Belle says that she and Clive did experience a miscarriage in 2012, just like in the show. “She becomes visibly upset when questioned about this and refuses to discuss it, other than to tearfully deny allegations it was another false health crisis,” Woman's Day wrote in a 2015 interview.
Clive, who reportedly works in IT, was “supportive, but obviously devastated,” when Belle came clean about her lies, she told Woman's Day.
“He’s been very stern, along the lines of, ‘I just want you to acknowledge where you’ve f*cked up and not try and smooth over that,’” she said.
Belle made several mentions of Clive during a 2019 court appearance, noting that he paid for a family trip to Africa, her share of their $600 per-week rent, and thousands of dollars in legal expenses, per The Age. He was also involved in Belle’s businesses, registering The Whole Pantry's domain name in 2013, per the Herald Sun.
Are Belle Gibson and Clive Rothwell still together?
Clive has remained very low profile, both pre- and post-scandal. Belle has also been vague about the real nature of their relationship, saying in court that what he did for a living was “not my business,” per The Age.
While it seems like the two continued to date after the scandal, it’s unclear if they’re still together. In 2023, The Daily Mail published photos of Clive with another woman, although it’s not clear if they were dating.
Where is Clive Rothwell now?
Clive now lives in a two-bedroom apartment away from Belle, per the Daily Mail. He has not publicly commented on Apple Cider Vinegar.
