Chatting with Yahoo Lifestyle, the 30-year-old international Yu-Gi-Oh! Champion says he feels “amazing” after getting a haircut and changing his clothes.
“I feel so much more comfortable just in general and more confident talking to people or just walking into places. It’s crazy how much of a difference it makes,” he shares.
“For someone who's never really bothered at all to care about my appearance or do anything, it’s been really fresh and exciting.
“Especially now that I'm 30, I’ve really come to a point where I just wanted to make a change and do something different ... I was genuinely really excited for the makeover.”
Chris adds that he’s received plenty of supportive comments from his family, friends and work colleagues, and has already noticed that other people have started treating him “slightly differently”.
“It’s kind of weird actually,” he admits.
“I'd never really thought that looks were super important, and I don't think they're the most important thing or they determine someone's value, but it’s the first thing people see. And even if all it does is open up a potential connection and someone talks to you that wouldn’t have before, that’s a positive thing.
“That’s a good thing and that's what's worth something, so I think that's probably the most important part.”
‘It’s been really validating’
Following his makeover, a number of viewers took to social media to praise Chris’ new appearance and even draw comparisons to stars like Ashton Kutcher.
“It’s been amazing seeing so many positive comments online, I actually haven't seen anything negative at all,” he says.
“I've had friends and family reaching out as well saying how awesome it is and that they can’t believe how good I look. It’s been really validating.
“It's also really easy when you've spent a lot of your life not caring about what you look like or how you dress because even little changes people are really happy with,” he adds with a laugh. “You don’t have to go too crazy, the change itself is already enough for people to react and notice and treat you really positively.”
‘She’s been a wonderful partner’
Chris went on to reveal that the part of the makeover he was most nervous about was revealing his new look to his fellow contestants, however, he was instantly met with applause and screams of approval.
His partner, 30-year-old ex-NRL cheerleader Bri, also teared up when she saw him for the first time and said she was left speechless by his transformation.
“Bri has got such a bubbly and fun personality, but then inside she’s also so genuine and caring,” Chris shares. “Some of the cast even called her ‘Mama Bri’ because she’s someone that anyone can talk to and she’s always building people up and helping them out.
“She really built up my confidence over the experience and also of course in the challenges, she’s been a wonderful partner and we've done really well.”
Speaking about what viewers can expect for the rest of the season, Chris says he’s excited for people to see his friendship with Bri strengthen.
“We've seen now, especially in the last episode, a lot more about my connection with Bri, so I think hopefully that'll start to come out more as well, which is awesome,” he remarks.
