Millions of Americans will sit down this Sunday to watch the Chiefs take on the Eagles in the Super Bowl. Many will be hosting gatherings for family and friends, and according to a new study, they'll be shelling out a pretty penny to do it.

LendingTree released the findings of its latest survey, which asked more than 2,000 Americans how much they plan to spend on this year's Super Bowl festivities. It found that the average party planner will spend $142 on the festivities, which marks a 22% increase in spending year-over-year.

"Of course, we don’t just watch [the game]. A fortunate few will buy crazy-expensive tickets and travel to the game in New Orleans," LendingTree wrote in its findings. "For the rest of us, we throw parties at home that revolve around the game. We place bets. We buy mountains of food and drink. We get cool merchandise to make us look like fans of the best team and not people who jumped on the bandwagon."

As for who's spending the most, that goes to Millennials, who reported they will spend upwards of $226, followed by "high earners" who plan to spend $223, and parents of young kids, who say they'll spend $217.

According to the survey, the most common expenses are food and beverages, which 67% of Super Bowl watchers said they plan to purchase. An additional 17% said they plan to buy "fan gear" to show their team some love.

However, for many viewers, it's not about the game at all. In fact, nearly half (48%) said the game isn't the only reason they plan to watch. "Nearly 1 in 5 viewers (19%) say the halftime show is their main reason for tuning in, while another 17% say they watch mostly for the commercials." That's especially true for younger viewers, with 27% of Gen Z respondents saying they plan to just watch for halftime, along with 23% of millennial viewers. An additional 4% of respondents said they don't care about anything on the screen and are just going out of "social obligation."

There is one more thing impacting spending: Taylor Swift. According to the survey, 20% of respondents said she's influenced their spending on football. And we wouldn't be surprised if that included buying ingredients to make some "seemingly ranch" dressing. If you're still not sure what you're going to serve at your Super Bowl party, that's ok.
