Aldi shoppers wows followers by making three meals from one piece of pork: 'Great idea'

A savvy mum has shown her fans how to make $15 go further with this simple hack.

In a cost-of-living win, an Aussie mum has shared a budget-friendly cooking hack for making multiple family-sized meals with just one piece of pork. Tara Louise, known for her Smart Savings TikTok account where she regularly showcases cheap at-home recipes, took to the app to demonstrate the budget pork dish to her more than 39,000 followers.

Louise shopped for the meal at discount grocer Aldi, where she nabbed a 2kg boneless pork leg for just $15.

“I’m going to very easily get two meals and probably a bit for lunch out of this,” she said. “There’s plenty of meat here to do all five of us.”

After untying the pork leg, Louise cut the meat in half vertically before putting aside the half with the pork rind to bake a roast pork and crackling dish another day. With the remaining half, she removed the excess fat before seasoning the meat with salt and white pepper.

Next, Louise lightly oiled the base of a slow cooker and added the pork leg, a diced onion, a tin of crushed tomatoes, and a tablespoon each of crushed garlic, cumin, coriander, oregano and paprika. She also added two tablespoons each of honey and red wine vinegar, before combining the pork and seasonings together and placing a lid on the slow cooker.

To cook the pork, Louise advised to set the slow cooker on high for about four hours, or on low for six to eight hours. Once cooked, she shredded the meat with two ‘meat claws’ from Woolworths (two forks also do the trick).

“This is perfect, the meat is all tender,” she said. “It’s just over $7 for over a kilo’s worth of meat. We’re having this with pulled pork burgers and teaming it up with some coleslaw and chips, but you could have it with nachos, you could have it on a toastie … there’s so many options of what you can do with this budget-friendly, easy dinner.”

The recipe video has since been viewed over 65,000 times and boasts nearly 3000 likes. Louise’s followers also shared their praise for the dish in the comments section.

“What great ideas you have, thank you for sharing,” one follower wrote.

“Amazing tip!” another said.

“Great idea, I live alone so this will last many meals,” a third gushed.

Other TikTokers also shared additional tips and hacks for those looking to recreate the dish at home – or alternative dishes using pork.

“We do a whole roast pork first, then the leftovers are sliced up and reheated in a pan the following night, made into a curry,” one commenter wrote.

“I love using pork shoulder into pork ragu and it gets about three to four meals out of a 2kg piece,” another said. “So good and cheap cut.”
