Should you give your engagement ring back after a breakup?

77% of people don't necessarily think so...

Married at First Sight may be over for another year, but it doesn't mean everyone's controversial opinions about weddings, marriage, and everything in between dies off just because the show has finished.

TV journalist and The Cut Jewellery founder Talitha Cummins recently put up a poll on her Instagram story that divided people on one controversial wedding topic: what do you do with your engagement ring if you split up with your partner?

According to 77% of responders on the survey, the answer is no. But there were a few variations stipulated.

With Talitha's family being in the jewellery industry for over 50 years, she claims they have "seen it all".

“The women who choose not to give their ring back will sometimes come in to repurpose it, turning it into a necklace or another piece of jewellery," she shared. "Others keep it as a keepsake in their jewellery box and may one day hand it down to their children, and others will sell it and spend the money on something else, especially if they feel their time has been wasted.”

Talitha said she thought it would be fun to poll people on controversial wedding topics to see what the masses thought.

Some of the conditions people stated where they wouldn't have to give back an engagement ring, varied, with someone saying, "It really depends on who broke up with whom, if I broke up with my fiancé or husband, I may choose to give it back to him."

Others said it depended if kids were involved or family history were involved. "It depends if I have kids or not, if I have kids, I may hang onto it to pass it down," one person said.

"If it is a family heirloom, I would give it back. If not, and if he broke up with me, I would think twice before giving it back," another person commented.

Others said the engagement ring should be considered a "gift" and therefore not given back.

"It's like any gift," someone said. "Agree with giving back if an engagement is called off, but not once you're married. It's a gift," another agreed.

"Yes, they should be returned as they’re given in expectation of marriage.., it’s a conditional gift," someone else pointed out.
