Zooey Deschanel Shares Unfiltered Opinion of Working With Taylor Swift for 'New Girl' Cameo

Zooey Deschanel recently took an opportunity to “set the record straight” about Taylor Swift.

The New Girl star worked with the “Fortnight” songstress briefly more than one decade ago when Swift, 34, made a cameo on the Fox sitcom. The episode in which Swift appeared, titled “Elaine’s Big Day,” aired as the Season 2 finale in May 2013.

Several years later, Deschanel, 44, reflected on her experience working with the pop superstar during a recent episode of The Mess Around, a New Girl rewatch podcast hosted by Deschanel’s former co-stars, Hannah Simone and Lamorne Morris. The podcast episode featuring Deschanel was released on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The 500 Days of Summer actress said Swift “wasn’t on set very long,” having essentially stopped by just in time to film her small part near the end of the episode. Deschanel and Swift shared a hair and makeup trailer before the scene, the actress recalled, and bonded over a mutual admiration for a particular lipstick shade that Deschanel was using at the time.

“If anyone ever says anything mean about her, I'm so mad because she is such a nice person,” Deschanel said of Swift. The 14-time Grammy Award winner “is so cool” and “unbelievably nice,” Deschanel declared. "I’ve never seen her be anything but absolutely so lovely and down to earth.”

Deschanel noted that she, like her New Girl character, is a Swiftie. The “Cruel Summer” singer’s appearance on the show later caused some confusion among New Girl fans who wondered why Deschanel’s character, Jess Day, didn’t react to seeing the pop idol in person.

Over time, Deschanel said she has come to the concluded that Swift must have been playing “a woman who’s a doppelgänger for Taylor Swift.”

The Almost Famous actress then made a bold declaration about the Eras touring artist. “Let's set the record straight that Taylor is awesome,” Deschanel said. "Everything that you imagine her to be that you hope she is, she is.”
