Kevin Costner Breaks His Silence on the 'Yellowstone' Finale
After nearly two years of anticipation, Yellowstone wrapped up its fifth and apparently final season this past Sunday but that doesn't mean all the drama is over for those who worked on the series. Ahead of the finale, star Luke Grimes, who played the youngest Dutton sibling Kayce, made some waves with his comments about the much-discussed mid-season exit of series lead Kevin Costner.
Costner, who was rumored to be the subject of behind-the-scenes conflict with show creator Taylor Sheridan, unceremoniously departed the series after its mid-season finale in January 2023, leading to his character, John Dutton, eventually being killed off-screen in the second half of season five.
“To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone,” Grimes told Esquire earlier this month. “Obviously, it didn’t make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but [season 5B] was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”
In a separate interview with Men's Health, he clarified that he is not in contact with his former co-star. “I haven’t talked to him since [he left the show]. It’s not a case of any hard feelings or anything; it’s just, he’s Kevin Costner. He’s a big deal. I do have his phone number—I just don’t feel like it’s my place to reach out. He can reach out to me if he wants to.”
However, a video obtained by the Daily Mail makes that reunion seem unlikely. When asked about Grimes by paparazzi in Aspen in the days after the series finale, Costner responded, “We’re done talking.”
As for his character's off-screen death, he said, “I didn’t see it. I heard it’s a suicide, so that doesn’t make me want to rush to go see it.
When it comes to the finale itself, Costner was apparently not part of the audience that resulted in huge ratings for the episode. “I’m not thinking about [the Yellowstone finale],” he said. “I don’t think I’ve given it any thoughts. We’ll just let it go.” He added, “I’m going to be perfectly honest. I didn’t know it was actually airing last night. I didn’t realize yesterday was the thing. Sometimes I’m like just a passenger in my life. There’s a lot going on. And somebody said, you know, it played last night? And I said, ‘Hmm, OK.’ So no, I found out about it this morning actually.”
