Zayn Malik unmasked as celebrity shadow duelist at Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament
The "Stardust" singer even showed off his childhood binder full of Yu-Gi-Oh! cards during the livestream.
It’s gotta be you(-Gi-Oh!) for Zayn Malik.
The “Stardust” singer, 31, was unmasked as the mysterious Shadow Duelist named Nocturne during the Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel livestream tournament on Thursday. The free-to-play digital card game has been teasing this whole month that a mysterious celebrity — who could be seen sporting a spooky mask and using a voice changer in promotional material — would be unveiled at the end of the tournament, with the event’s victor earning their signed mask as a reward.
After a player named Fictinium was crowned the winner, Malik took his mask off and shared his personal love of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, including its games and anime. “Yeah, I’m a big, big Yu-Gi-Oh! fan. I’ve been into Yu-Gi-Oh! for a long time, since I was a small kid, so it’s an honor to be here, to do this, and it was very exciting,” he revealed. “I’ve been looking forward to it for a few weeks."

Malik himself did not compete within the competition, but instead oversaw the event and provided commentary on its four final competitors’ performances alongside its hosts. In order to conceal his identity, the One Direction alum sported his Nocturne mask, gloves, and used a voice changer.
He even showed off his childhood Yu-Gi-Oh! binder filled with all of his cards toward the end of the stream. “The question was before, what is my favorite card? Obviously, I have the Shooting Star Dragon — and, obviously, it’s one of my most powerful cards, that’s why I like it so much,” he said, showing one of his holographic cards to the camera. “I have the Shooting Quasar Dragon, too.”
Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel has been dropping several hints about Malik’s identity over the last month on social media, with some of their posts describing him as “cloaked in shadow and draped in melody” and noting that he “was part of a celebrated brotherhood of troubadours” before going solo.
As it turns out, Malik isn’t the only star with a passion for Yu-Gi-Oh!, either. The singer teased that he’s actually just the first of a “whole cabal” of celebrity Shadow Duelists that will be hosting the celebrity tournaments in the future.
And, he also teased that he'll be releasing new music soon, too. “I’m massively honored to be here, this was very fun," Malik said of the event. "I have some interesting stuff coming out with my music pretty soon, some pretty big announcements coming up, so if you’re interested in my music at all, I’ve got some cool news coming pretty soon.”
