Pregnant woman arguing with another woman

A woman says she won't be changing the name she selected for her unborn daughter after her brother's girlfriend "demanded" she do so — saying the name reminded her of her own late daughter.

In a post on Reddit, the anonymous 27-year-old woman writes that she and her husband are pregnant with their first child, and she is now 20 weeks along. Recently, the two landed on a name for their baby.

"It's his late grandmother's name and a name I had always liked so we went with it," she writes, adding that the moniker is special because her husband's late grandmother raised him after he lost his mom at 8 years old, and played "a massive part" in her life, as well.

"We both loved the idea of our baby girl to take the name of her great-grandmother and to wear it in honor of her," the woman writes in her post.

But when the two shared the planned name with loved ones, they ran into a problem.

"After we announced the name, my brothers girlfriend flipped," she writes.

"She stated that was her late daughters name (from a different man, not my brother so I had no idea that was her name)," she continues in the Reddit post.

The brother's girlfriend was so upset, according to the post, that she "immediately demanded we change the name."

"I explained it was also in honor of [my] husband’s late grandmother and it had real meaning to us and we didn’t want to change it," the woman writes. "But she insisted she couldn’t hear her daughters name, especially not on another child."

The post continues: "I understand it must be so hard but the name has meaning to us and if I’m being honest, if she was genuinely a part of my family, I may have considered but my brother wasn’t sure if they were forever." The couple has been dating for 8 months.

"I offered for them to come up with a nickname we use around her if she desperately didn’t want to hear the name but she refused and said she doesn’t care about whose grandmother is dead, she had it coming but her daughter still had her whole life ahead of her and called me an inconsiderate cow," the woman adds.

The woman's brother "broke up with her on the spot" as a result of the remark, but now the poster wonders if she "took it too far."

Commenters certainly don't think so.

"I get why she is upset, but she can't demand that of you," wrote one. "If you're not even close enough to her to know the name of her late daughter, then that's far enough of a separation that she can't tell you what to do."

Another echoed that, writing: "Nobody owns a name ... You didn't know her daughter... Y'all aren't family... I personally don't think you did anything wrong."
