Why Valerie Bertinelli Felt 'Guilty' About Her Party Days: 'I Am a Prude Now'
Valerie Bertinelli, who gained fame for her performance in One Day at a Time in the 1970s and '80s, recently opened up about her past partying and drug use and how she feels about it now.
The actress spoke about her history with fellow child star Drew Barrymore on her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show, boldly declaring, "I don’t remember anything about the ‘80s.”
Bertinelli, who married the late Eddie Van Halen in 1981 and was with the musician until 2007, shared her honest feelings about her behavior during the '80s, saying, "For the longest time, I always felt guilty about the things I experimented with and what I tried when I was a young girl."
Barrymore replied, "That’s such an ABC Afterschool Special term. Were you ever in an ABC Afterschool Special?” Bertinelli noted that she was in 15 and Getting Straight about drug prevention before she joked, "I was an Afterschool Special!"
The actress then added, "By the way, I was also the ‘Just Say No’ girl with Nancy Reagan, until I just said yes."
In previous conversations, the 64-year-old stated that she used cocaine back then, admitting to Rob Lowe on his podcast, "I am a prude now but I [partook] as well for a few years there until I just couldn't take it anymore."
Bertinelli explained to Barrymore during her latest TV appearance that she forgave herself for her past actions, telling Barrymore, who has been open about her past drug use as well, "We coped the way we knew how to cope with a really challenging, strange life. And also, we have to start giving ourselves grace for just trying to learn through stuff.”
