Despite the fact it still feels like we're in July, the weather is warming, footy is nearly over, the beach summer is just around the corner, and you know what that means — an October long weekend is nearly upon us.

But does everyone get to experience the joy of an extra day off in October? A simple, kind gesture to enable (some of) us to take a small break from capitalism and go touch the grass? Unfortunately not. We never said life was fair. Sorry also to all the hospitality workers, essential workers, etc. etc. reading this article and scratching their heads and wondering what a day off even is.

If you're crossing off your calendars in eager anticipation of a cheeky Monday off soon, we have good news for the following states and territories: people in NSW, SA, ACT, and QLD can all enjoy Monday, October 7 off work for 'Labour Day' and 'King's Birthday' respectively.

Victorians, before you start rioting, you obviously have the Friday before the AFL Grand Final off. You don't need me to tell you that, it's ingrained in your culture, just like deconstructed coffee. That means you get Friday, September 27 off ahead of the Big Game (go Swans!)

Are you in for a good long weekend? Personally, I'll be working, but I hope you have fun. Photo: Getty

As for Tassie, WA and NT — bad luck to our mates there. No extra days off for you in October. Sorry, don't complain to me, I don't make the rules.

Personally, I find it hard to believe anyone has ever gone, "Oh man, I wish I lived in Canberra" but as it turns out, our ACT friends are currently benefitting from the most public holidays in Australia, with 13 days off in 2024.

NSW, the NT, and WA have 10 days off per state, with SA making up a similar quota with additional part days off on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
