Jim Gaffigan had one sole question for Kelly Clarkson while visiting her talk show on Tuesday: where are your shoes?

The comedian, 58, jokingly put the “Stronger” singer and TV host, 42, on blast after he noticed that she was barefoot at the beginning of their interview on Tuesday, asking, “What is going on with the feet?”

Gaffigan then began to jokingly speculate about the reasons why Clarkson had left her shoes behind. “I feel more grounded when I sing if I’m barefoot,” he teased, adopting a higher-pitched voice. “I can feel the ground.”

As it turns out, there was some truth to his teasing. “The best part of that statement and how [much of a] tool [I sound] is it’s true," a laughing Clarkson admitted. "That’s what I actually say!”

While the Grammy winner confessed that she does enjoy performing barefoot, she explained that there was a very simple reason for why she'd ditched her heels during the show. “My feet hurt,” Clarkson said. “The stilettos I was supposed to wear today, I didn’t have enough middle fingers for it… so I just said no. I’ve never gone barefoot before, but that’s okay. That’s what we’re doing.”

Gaffigan, however, had some thoughts on the shoeless situation. “For me, first of all, I wouldn’t have my feet exposed because I respect the audience,” he said. In response, Clarkson happily waved her legs in the air and quipped back, “And I don’t!”

He also noted that the foot-forward footage might draw in some new viewership. “There’s a portion of the internet that’s going to love this show especially," he teased, to which Clarkson replied, “I’m gonna get a whole new fanbase.”

While Clarkson’s decision to go barefoot might have taken Gaffigan by surprise, this isn’t the first time that the host has taken off her heels in order to get extra comfy on set. She often goes shoeless while filming her Kellyoke segment, including during her covers of songs like Birdy’s “Quietly Yours,” and The Revivalists’ “It Was A Sin.”
