In the year of the press tour (2024), one reigned supreme. Okay, fine, it was Wicked. But a close runner-up followed, led by the People’s Prince, Timothée Chalamet. His latest film, A Complete Unknown, sees the internet heartthrob take on the role of Bob Dylan. The film comes from James Mangold, who previously directed Walk the Line; Girl, Interrupted; a couple of X-Men movies; and a few Indiana Jones flicks, among others.
If you’ve never heard of the drama surrounding Bob Dylan, it’s because the tea is ice-cold compared to the artist scandals of our time. The central issue in this film—and Bob Dylan’s career—is the controversy around his use of electric instruments in folk music. The film’s climax occurs at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, which is objectively hilarious.
The film also stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, another folk artist of the time; Elle Fanning stars as a fictionalized version of Dylan’s IRL girlfriend, Sue Rotolo; and Monica Barbaro plays Joan Baez. The best news? The movie lands in theaters on Christmas Day. Without even going into wide release, the film has earned some rave reviews. A Complete Unknown was named one of the top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute, and Chalamet is already a contender in the awards race for Best Actor (and is already up for a 2025 Golden Globe!)
First question. Does Timmy sing?
He sure does! Our leading man sang 40 Bob Dylan songs in the making of A Complete Unknown, in addition to playing guitar and harmonica. He and the other actors performed live using period-appropriate instruments and microphones. We’ve got a triple threat on our hands folks.
So, how can I watch it?
Merry Christmas, you’re going to the movies. For now, that’s the only place to see our sweet Timmy and his Dylan-esque mop.
Where can I stream it?
The better question, dear reader, is when. There is no telling when the film will be watchable from home, but if history prevails, it will be available before the end of awards season. When it does begin streaming, A Complete Unknown will most likely land on Hulu and/or Disney+, where most Searchlight Pictures films land.
Until them, bundle up and head the place where our heroes feel like thе best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful. Because there, they are.
