A hopeful bride-to-be has decided to take matters into her own hands with a creative, albeit unconventional, plan to prompt her partner to propose after five and a half years together. Her strategy? Surprise him by dressing up in a wedding gown when he got home from work.

The result? Not exactly what she was hoping for.

"My partner, we've been together five and a half years, we have two kids together, he hasn't proposed to me," TikToker Caitlin Sharpie explains in her viral video.

"Which is fine, but I thought I might show him how good I look in a wedding dress so I've gone out, found this wedding dress, brand new for free on Facebook... I'm gonna put it on when he gets home from work and as he walks in the door I'm going to be standing there."

"It's quite stunning," she continues. "I haven't been in a dress like this before. I'm going to do my hair, straighten it, and wear it down... it might be my wedding day today."

Once dressed, Sharpie positions herself at the front door, hoping to catch her partner off guard in a way that would lead to a proposal.

“I’m going to stand here like this... he’ll walk through that door, you’ll see his reaction. Hopefully, he likes it and gives me a ring. Fingers crossed.”

However, her partner's reaction was far from what she expected.

As he walked in, he stopped short and looked her up and down.

"Welcome home," she greeted him.

"What the f*ck is that?" he asked, laughing.

"Do you like it?" she asked, trying to keep the mood light.

"It's not a very good one, is it?" he responded, still laughing, referring to the dress.

Sharpie's tone shifted: "So you don't like me in a wedding dress?"

He continued laughing and said: "No, I don't like it at all."

The exchange continued to become more and more awkward. Her partner kept questioning the dress, and why she was wearing it, to which she explained: "To make you want to engage me!"

His laughter continued as she tried to clarify her intentions.

“You’re meant to see me look good in it and be like wow, maybe I should engage her to get her in one quicker.”

In short, the plan didn't culminate in a romantic proposal as she had hoped. Instead, he burst out laughing, told her the dress was ugly, and walked off.

The social media response was massive, with thousands of people expressing their shock, dismay, and support for Sharpie.

"You deserve so much more than this," one person wrote.

"My heart actually broke for you, you are beautiful," said another.

"He should be begging you to marry him."

Many, however, suggested that she might be overlooking a clear lack of interest from her partner and hoping for something that is unlikely to ever happen.

Comments like: "He doesn't want to marry you, what more are you waiting for?" and "Girl, he doesn't seem to like you that much" popped up several times.

Public figures also joined the conversation, adding weight to the outcry. Reality star Abbie Chatfield commented: "This made me cry, girl. You deserve so much more kindness and openness than this."

This sentiment was echoed by Big Brother alum Tilly Whitfield, who wrote: "Please, this made me so sad. Also, you looked beautiful. I don't think his reaction is the problem, the problem is you felt the need to do this to propose, but you gave him his babies, he should have proposed ages ago!"

The influx of comments didn't stop there, with countless followers suggesting Sharpie deserved better: "I actually think his reaction is quite unsettling," one user noted.

Some people, however, had sympathy for her partner, thinking he might have just been caught by surprise.

"It's not that serious, some dudes be lazy honestly," said one.

A few even agreed with his critique: "He's kind of right, it doesn't suit your body type."

Another user offered a compromise, "I think if you take the dress to a tailor so they can get it fitted, it'll be jaw-dropping. Then go find a new man."

"Please tell me you aren't with him anymore," someone entreated. "Still am," Sharpie responded.

Despite the mixed reactions, Sharpie maintained a sense of humour about the situation. She assured her followers: “It’s only a joke, I’m in no rush.”

One follower humorously added: “Tag me in part 2 when he finally proposes!”
