Francisco San Martin, ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘Jane the Virgin’ Actor, Dies at 39

Francisco San Martin, an actor known for his roles in “Days of Our Lives” and “Jane the Virgin,” died last Thursday. He was 39.

San Martin died by suicide, confirmed by the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office in their report, with the cause of death ruled as “ligature hanging.”

San Martin played Dario Hernandez on the long-running soap opera “Days of Our Lives” from 2010-2011, starring in a total of 59 episodes. His character first appears as a thief before being revealed to be investigating a cold case.

In the years after his breakout role, he was featured in Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind the Candelabra” with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas. He was also in 16 episodes of “The Bold and the Beautiful” and seven episodes of “Jane the Virgin” alongside Gina Rodriguez. His last screen credit was in the short “Dot,” directed by Tiffany Frances.

San Martin got his start acting in children’s theater productions in Montana, the state he was raised in, before returning to Spain as a teenager where he worked as model. He appeared in many Spanish plays and shows before returning to the U.S. to work professionally.

Camila Banus, who played Dario’s sister Gabi on “Days of Our Lives,” took to Instagram stories to share a tribute. She wrote: “Pepe, what can I say but I love you and rest in peace, my friend. Love you mucho mucho mucho. I wish I had told you more.”
