Yahoo Lifestyle Uma Thurman Said She Felt Comfortable Around “Macho Filmmaker” Paul Schrader After Finding Out He’s A “Huge Taylor Swift Fan”
Uma Thurman revealed her ultimate green flag in the directors she works with.
In case you didn’t know, Uma is one of the stars of the upcoming movie Oh, Canada, which will be released in theaters in December.
The film is based on Russell Banks’s 2021 novel Foregone. It follows the story of a dying documentary filmmaker named Leonard Fife, who decides to tell his unfiltered life story in a final interview with one of his former pupils.
Richard Gere stars as the current-day Leonard, while Jacob Elordi plays his younger self. Michael Imperioli plays Malcolm, the pupil conducting the interview, and Uma portrays Leonard’s wife, Emma.
During the premiere of Oh, Canada at the New York Film Festival this weekend, Uma admitted during a Q&A session that she was a little anxious about working with the film’s director, Paul Schrader.
“I mean, Paul Schrader!” she said per People, shouting out the screenwriter and director known for films like Taxi Driver, First Reformed, and American Gigolo. “I’m a really big fan of Paul Schrader. So to get to contribute, to lend myself to his piece, and get to see him working was a real, real privilege.”
Describing Paul as a “macho filmmaker” who’s worked on some “legendary films,” Uma recalled feeling “very nervous to meet him” at first. However, she soon relaxed when she discovered they shared some common ground.
“As I was on my way to the meeting, a person driving me was googling and she’s like, ‘Oh my God, he’s a huge Taylor Swift fan,’” Uma remembered. “I was like, ‘What?’ And then I read Paul’s quote or tweet about defending Taylor and I was like, ‘Oh, I’m fine.’”
Instantly feeling more comfortable going into their first meeting, Uma said she and Paul developed a great working relationship, describing him as a “softie” at heart.
“I think the cast and crew were all there for Paul and learned so much, just watching him as a master. So centered and I would say a big softie,” she said during the Q&A.
“The movie was shot in a very precise, quick way,” she continued. “There was not a lot of time. And to see a sort of master of cinema who is going to have to go in and get precisely exactly what he wants and needs…and has the entire vernacular language of cinema at his fingertips was just breathtaking.”
In April this year, Paul showed his love for Taylor in a Facebook post, in which he suggested there’s scope for a movie about her rise to pop super-stardom.
A few months later, he told Variety that he’s in “awe” of Taylor, saying: “It’s not so much the music that entrances me, it’s the phenomenon. The Elvis-ness of it all. You have to look in awe at how well she and her people have created this empire.”
