Uber Driver's Extensive List of Car Rules Divides Opinions: ‘Gonna Be at My Destination Before I Finish Reading It’

“People can say they agree with it, but it's lame to throw rules up after the transaction is literally already in progress,” a Redditor wrote

An Uber customer found a lengthy list of passenger rules in the backseat during a recent ride — and it has people divided.

The rider shared a photo of the rules on Reddit on Jan. 9 and titled the post, “My Uber driver’s list of passenger rules.” The photo showed a laminated set of typed-out rules attached to the back of the front seats.

The rules began: “Pets are always welcome they must remain either in your lap or on the floor at all times to avoid pet hair for the next passenger. Do your best to clean up after your pet to avoid cleanup fees.”

“Keep children safely seated at all times, no kicking seats or playing with doors/windows to avoid tickets,” the rules continued. “Put earbuds in if you’re taking a call, I do not want to hear speaker phone conversations. This goes for social media scrolling and all.”

The bulleted list added: “I will not turn my radio off or down to inaudibility for your personal or business calls, I do not want to hear your corporate meetings or personal business dealings. Have them before entering or once exiting my car. No exceptions. Do not ask me.”

“Do not eat or drink in my car. Water is fine. If you do and a mess or smell is left, it will be reported to Uber/Lyft and they will charge a cleaning fee starting at $50. No matter how small. Same applies to children,” the driver wrote. “No vaping/smoking at any point.”

“Cover your nose/mouth when coughing or sneezing. If I notice you don’t, it will be reported as a safety concern!! This goes for children too. Wear a mask if you’re sick,” another rule said, while the next one read, “Wearing a seatbelt is up to you. You could potentially be ticketed however.”

The driver concluded the list with, “If at any point you’re not enjoying the ride, refuse to respect my rules or feel uncomfortable in any way […] I will gladly pull over so that you may request another driver. Ask me right away. Thank you for respecting these simple car etiquette rules. Let’s enjoy a pleasant ride to your destination safely.”

The post has received more than 1,300 responses as of Jan. 10, with commenters divided over whether the rules are reasonable or over-the-top.

“Gonna be at my destination before I finish reading it,” wrote one Redditor.

“Phone calls to make or not, if a person I'm paying for a service is playing music that's too loud or that I just don't like, I'm going to ask them to turn it off. When you're a service provider, you have to make certain [accommodations] for your customers, and that should include a silent ride if required,” added another.

However, other commenters are giving the driver the benefit of the doubt — especially based on the disrespectful passengers they may have encountered in the past.

“Seems like he is a generally good driver who is tired [of people] who have no manners or social etiquette. Sad he even [needs] to post 'rules' which are common decency,” wrote another.

Others noted that many of the rules are reasonable in theory but took issue with the tone of the message.

“I agree most of those are polite things to do, but the tone and length of it (and unwillingness to adjust his radio) deserves an immediate one star rating. The tone of it reads as ‘get in, sit down, shut the f— up, and f— you.’ “ one person wrote.

“If this guy is going to have rules, we need to see them before we're already committed and in the car. People can say they agree with it, but it's lame to throw rules up after the transaction is literally already in progress when he accepted the passenger's request in the app,” wrote another.
