Tom Selleck Shares the Humble Way He's Celebrating His Birthday
As hard as it may be to believe, some actors really are just like us. Take Tom Selleck, for example. The revered actor is celebrating his 80th birthday today, Wednesday, January 29. His big celebratory plans? An intimate dinner with his wife and siblings.
“I’ll probably have dinner with maybe my brother and my sister and Jillie, just go out to dinner, kind of be quiet, and not make a big deal of it,” he told Parade when asked how he planned to celebrate his milestone birthday.
While many actors throw lavish parties and enjoy week-, if not month-long birthday festivities, Tom prefers to keep things more low-key, even though he can undoubtedly afford a massive celebration. One reason? He doesn’t want to hyperfocus on his age.
“I’m trying not to count,” he revealed to Parade. “I stopped celebrating birthdays a while back. I intend to keep working.”
What he’s working on, only time will tell. Tom’s biggest role of the past two decades—15 years as Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods—just wrapped in December. Now, his calendar is clear, with endless career potential. One possibility? More Jesse Stone movies.
“I haven’t worked on it yet,” he admitted to Parade. “It would be an interesting challenge because Jesse is older now. There’ve been quite a few years between shows. That doesn’t mean he isn’t a viable character. Everywhere I go one of the things I get asked is, ‘When can I see another Jesse Stone?’”
Meanwhile, some people are crossing their fingers for a Blue Bloods spin-off. “I’m open to suggestions because I love Frank Reagan, but nobody’s really asked,” Tom told Parade. “I don’t see him retiring and going off somewhere. If he goes off to a small town, I’d rather do more Jesse Stone movies.”
While we wait to see where Tom’s storied career leads next, we’re sending the very best birthday wishes his way. He may not want to count, but 80 years is something to celebrate.
