Now that Tom Selleck has wrapped up his time as Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods, he’s taking a moment to consider his next move while reminiscing on past roles.
While many people associate Tom with his iconic ‘80s and '90s roles—Magnum, P.I., Three Men and a Baby, and Quigley Down Under—and his 14-season-long tenure as Commissioner Reagan, much of the younger generation knows Tom from his time on Friends, despite how short-lived it was.
In an exclusive interview with Parade, the 6-foot-4 actor revealed that he was originally contracted for just a few episodes before it budded into something more.
“People talk to me about my role on Friends all the time,” the 79-year-old actor shared. “It was a lovely experience, something I didn’t see coming. They just explained this idea and you had to make a leap of faith. They didn’t have a script or anything. I remember I was supposed to do three shows, and on the third show at the table read, somebody said, ‘Oh, that’s right, this is your last show. I wish you could come back.’ I said, ‘Well, nobody asked me.’ So that turned into nine shows.”
Fans jumped to the comments section to express their disbelief at his short run on the sitcom: "It was only 9 episodes?! It felt like he was there the whole season! Awh so nice to hear him talk about it." Another wrote, "I was thinking the same thing. There is no way it was only nine episodes?" According to IMDB, it was a total of 10, spanning from season 2 to season 6 of the popular sitcom.
The reason Tom was happy to partake in Friends, when he’d long been known for his dramatic roles beyond his comedic ones, was because of the emotional balance the show provided. “I would love to do another comedy; the right kind of comedy,” he told Parade. “Friends made people laugh and cry at times. That’s the kind of comedy I enjoy doing. Three Men and a Baby had that, too.”
While Tom would be pleased to elicit a few laughs, he’s also hoping to make his way back into the Western genre. “A good Western’s always on my list,” he told Parade. “I miss that; I want to sit on a horse again.”
