TikToker's controversial take on 'legendary' chicken sandwiches: 'I am salivating right now'
Peter Rowland's chicken sandwiches have been loved for over 50 years, but a content creator has put a twist on the classic.
If you're a foodie always on the lookout for your next delicious feed, start loosening off your belt, because popular TikToker @serenesaryne has just dropped a recipe that's making people on social media hungry. For those familiar with David Jones' legendary Peter Rowland chicken sandwiches - which have been a hit for more than 50 years - Saryne's creation promises to elevate your lunch game to the level of these famous sangas.
Renowned for their exquisite taste and unparalleled quality, Rowland's classic sandwiches have long been hailed as a staple among discerning foodies. So, what makes these so special? Saryne thinks she has it figured out.
Controversial twist on beloved classic
In her latest upload, the TikToker meticulously breaks down the steps to recreate these iconic sandwiches, promising a flavour experience like no other.

Starting with diced pre-cooked BBQ chicken, specifically the breast, Saryne combines this with a mix of fresh chives, dried parsley, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper, whole egg mayo, dijon mustard, and the juice of half a lemon. For a creamy twist, she adds her "surprise ingredient," avocado, resulting in a luxurious richness to the filling that she's convinced will take it to the next level.
According to the TikToker, fresh chives are "non-negotiable" for achieving that burst of freshness essential to the sandwich's flavour profile.
While the famous recipe has not changed since 1962, Saryne does make a few controversial tweaks including the type of chicken she uses. Rowland has formerly revealed to Good Food that the chicken breast must be 'slowly poached', however the content creator stands firm in her preference for the convenience of pre-cooked BBQ chicken.
"The original Peter Rowland recipe has the chicken in chunks," she also explains, "I like pieces of chicken. If it's too mushy, it's a bit overpowering."
Saryne also uses a different bread than what is traditionally used in Rowland's recipe.
"I don't serve it on white bread like Peter," she clarifies, noting that her colleagues, the lucky recipients of her sandwiches, have a preference for the fluffy texture of rye bread.
As she takes her first bite, the verdict is clear: "Best sandwiches ever. Best."
Social media suggestions
And with that declaration, she ignites a social media frenzy, with users flocking to drool over the dish and share their own variations on the humble chicken sando.
"Yummmm I'm inspired!" commented one user, while another chimed in, declaring, "Chicken sandwiches are the ultimate food."
"I need these now," wrote another follower, with someone else adding, "This looks bomb," and a third admitting, "I'm drooling!"
"The way I am salivating right now!"
Others contributed their own twists to the theme.
"YUM, I make this but I add celery or walnuts for crunch," shared one person, while another suggested, "You have to add a packet of roasted pine nuts!"
"I make mine using BBQ chicken, spring onion, fresh thyme, mayo, stuffing from inside the chicken, and salt and pepper," offered someone else.
