According to the TikToker, for shiny silverware, simply take a sheet of aluminium foil, crumple it into a ball, and pop it into your cutlery tray. Then, run your dishwasher on a normal setting, sit back, and let the foil work its magic.

How does it work?

Diving into the science behind the hack, Long explains: "if your dishwasher leaves your utensils looking dull or covered in water spots, the combination between aluminium, a dishwasher tab and hot water creates a reaction that lifts silver sulphide, also known as tarnish."

Long promises that this straightforward process will leave your utensils "shining like new," with no water spots in sight.

Of course, where there's a hack, the internet has opinions. One enthusiastic commenter hailed the trick as "genius!" sharing their own silver cleaning hack involving aluminium foil, baking soda, and hot water.

On the other hand, some sceptics weren't quite convinced. "I don't know if I'm allowed to trust this tip, but I'm too lazy to do the research," admitted one person, sparking a wave of chuckles from fellow users.

However, there were those who vouched for the hack's effectiveness from personal experience. "I can tell you this works," assured one commenter. "It's actually how I recycle my aluminium foil."

Alternate methods

But, as with any viral hack, along came the naysayers to spoil our fun. Some suggested investing in better dishwasher tablets or adding rinse-aid to the cycle, while others simply advocated for the old-school approach of washing and drying by hand.

And then there was one who deemed it an altogether dismal notion, remarking: "Ever wondered why they removed aluminium from deodorants? And you add it now to everything that touches your food? Don't."
