The Project hosts left stunned after Yumi Stynes slams Ten
"Channel 10 hasn't given me one paid job besides some appearance on some show, one time."
The Project hosts were left stunned on Friday night after Yumi Stynes slammed Channel 10, claiming the network stopped giving her paid work in recent years after a comment the presenter and author made over ten years ago.
Yumi appeared on the show to speak about her book Welcome to Sex: Your no-silly-questions Guide to sexuality, pleasure and figuring it out, which has created a lot of backlash against the writer as some people believe it's inappropriate for young children.
The backlash came swiftly, with countless social media users targeting Yumi with death threats over the book. Big W stripped the books from its shelves. However, they have kept it available online.
Speaking with hosts Hamish Macdonald, Georgie Tunny, Susie Youssef, Woody Whitelaw, Yumi shared that it's been "pretty rough" since the backlash began online.
Hamish asked Yumi how she's been coping, with the author responding: "Look, a lot of people think that having a now best-selling book is vindication and victory. And I'm really pleased that the net outcome of this controversy is that a lot more kids will be reading the book, that makes me super happy.

"As far as being the whipping person who has to cop abuse in order for this outcome to take place, I would really rather not, and I think given the choice Hamish it's been pretty rough."
Hamish continued, asking Yumi: "I've gotta say I think sometimes for people in the public domain and particularly for my female friends that are in the public domain, there are very genuine and real world consequences and I've seen that happen to you in the past, is that happening again now?"
Yumi responded, saying: "Look, some of those real world consequences include the fact that I'm not on television anymore, Hamish, to be quite honest like since that controversy in 2011 around a comment I made around Ben Roberts-Smith, Channel 10 hasn't given me one paid job besides some appearance on some show, one time, so real world consequences? Yes. People threatening my life. Yes."
She continued: "There was a guy in the supermarket today, I was buying strawberries for my kids, and I kept checking over my shoulder, wondering if he was going to smack me over the back of the head, which is entirely possible. So yeah, the real world consequences I feel still to this day, and I think people who think that they're not involved and they're not culpable definitely are."
