Accusations of cheating, tradies sent home: The Block hits crisis point
It’s official; amid accusations of cheating, contestants going broke, tradies being sent home, and cars going missing, The Block 2019 has reached crisis point.
Despite being on the home stretch after weeks of budget dramas and ‘game’ talk it seems The Block couples are all but crumbling under the immense stress and pressure, to complete the huge task set for them by Scott Cam and producers.
Frontrunners Mitch and Mark are broke
Monday night’s episode saw Bondi grandads Mitch and Mark, professional property flippers, hit rock bottom despite having been this season’s most successful team winning multiple room reveals and challenges.
In an epic fall from grace the pair were forced to send home all their trades as they discovered they were actually in the red when it came to their budget.
After going through the team’s numbers, Mark revealed they had about $16,000 in unexpected bills – leaving them with anywhere between $2,000 and $10,000 still outstanding.
After the bombshell discovery Mitch returned from his shopping trip and the couple could be heard talking about how they now might not even make it to auction.
“We’re f**ked. We can’t finish the house,” Mitch said. “Forget winning the auction – we might not get to f**king auction at this point.”
The news spread like wildfire as other couples discussed the situation, some unable to hide the smiles.
Especially Tess and Luke, who were faced with the same situation a few weeks back, before they won a room.
“They’ve won something like $30,000 in the past couple of weeks?” Tess said. “It’s about time they had a taste of what poor felt like. Welcome. Welcome to the peasant side!”
Tess accuses Mitch and Mark of cheating
Off camera however, Tess has also levelled some pretty serious accusations towards the seasoned renovators, claiming the only way Mitch and Mark have been able to afford some of the things they’ve done is because they are using their own personal credit cards.
Of course it's against the rules of The Block for teams to spend their own money, and they must stick to the budgets allocated to them by producers.
“They used their own personal credit card to buy things when everyone else was told they weren't allowed to," Tess told NW.
Mitch and Mark have strongly denied Tess' claims saying they are “lying” and “lashing out”.
Things have been tense for a while for many of the contestants, with Tess and Luke blasting The Block just last week, labelling the experience a “pretty horrible” one.
The shock criticism came after the newlyweds’ had an on-site confrontation with host Scott Cam, who found fault with the pair’s lavish spending when compared to other teams.
“We didn’t watch last night,” Luke told news.com.au after the episode last week, which also saw his wife break down in tears and declare she was ready to quit the show.
He went on to label the series’ structure “full of sh*t” and allege that he and Tess were “bloody sick of it”.
“We’re getting sick of how they’re editing us as being these big lazy pricks who don’t get off their a**e and do a single thing,” he said.
The case of the missing Block car
And it’s not just budget issues causing the team’s headaches, with a serious case of the “block brain” also rearing it’s head on Monday’s episode.
This time it was Andy and Deb caught up in a case of the missing Block car. Andy can be seen on the phone to Deb who is freaking out. She's only been off site for 15 minutes and now can’t find her car.
"Who would steal it? It's got The Block written on the side, it's got cameras in it!" she said.
They call a tow company to find out if that's what happened to the car, then call the police, before the special crimes investigation unit rings to say they had found the car.
Turns out it was just around the corner. And even though Deb jumps in and notices the seat had been moved back and someone had “definitely been there”, cameras soon reveal it was Deb all along.
She moved the seat back herself to take her shoes off. The car was not stolen. Deb just forgot where she parked it.
“Oh my goodness, I need to get more sleep,” she told he cameras.
With only a few weeks left in the competition it remains to be seen how many couples actually make it to the end.
The Block continues on Channel Nine tonight at 7:30pm.
