Teenager's memorable horse photo commended

A black horse, on a white background which is presumably a white or cloudy sky. It is cropped showing just the horse's neck, mane and head. It is yawning into the wind, but due to the angle which seems to be looking up at it, it seems to be laughing or shouting. Its mouth is open, showing its teeth, and it is sticking its tongue out. Its black mane is blowing in the wind, and a ray of sunshine has given the mane one streak of copper at the front of the horse's head.

A teenager who snapped a horse seemingly mid-laugh has been commended by the RSPCA for her photo.

Freya, 15, entered the charity's Young Photographer Awards 2024 after capturing horse Galaxy yawning in the wind.

She spent hours watching rescue ponies at the end of her road, who eventually "got curious, and would gallop up to say hello".

"I love the wind lifting the mane and the single beam of sunlight catching the copper in Galaxy's forelock," the Sheffield teen said.

The background of the image is black in the bottom left corner, and fades into a light grey-pink in the top right corner. In the foreground in focus is a red and black beetle. The black on its back fades into the red on hits head. Its antenna gives the impression that it is looking towards the right of the frame, but can see the photographer taking the photo. The bug seems to be sat on a kernel of a wheat plant.
'Beyond small' by Angelo Anderson was commended [RSPCA]
A white horse walks towards the left of the frame. The background is shadowy and white, as if a thunderstorm has just finished or is about to begin. The light is hitting the top of the horse to create a striking outline in the other greys and blacks in the image.
'Wild freedom' by Edward Lee Davies was also commended by the judges [RSPCA]

The photo, entitled 'Screaming', was commended at a ceremony at the Tower of London on Thursday.

Welsh teenager Anwen Whitehead was the overall winner this year with her photo of a puffin, entitled 'Daydreaming in the chamomiles'.

An image of a puffin. The bird is black all over, with white wings, and a white leaf-shaped patch covering the side of its face. It is looking to the left of the frame, while its body faces to the right. Its beak is bright orange and slightly stripey, with a black strip of colour on the beak nearer its face. There is a thin orange outline around its eye. The background is a blurred, dark green. In the foreground, also blurry, are about 14 chamomiles. They are little white flowers with yellow in the centre.

A fox, looking just off-camera towards the left. It is bending its head down slightly to drink from a puddle, which is reflecting a glass building that is in the background.

The background is the bottom of a pond or rock pool, and is blurry. The photo is taken from above. In the foreground is a small green snake, emerging from a rock under the water, but poking its head just above the surface. Ripples of water form in a circle around its head.
'Surfacing' by Alex Gray was commended in the under-12s category [RSPCA]
