Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell romance rumours: What's really going on?

The flirty pair raised eyebrows on their global press tour.

OPINION

There's no denying we all love a movie romance. A good rom-com will make our hearts flutter with a perfect story of two people who meet, fall in love, face some sort of challenge, fight for each other and live happily ever after. It's even more exciting when that on-screen passion spills over into real life.

Promoting their new addition to the genre, Anyone But You, Hollywood stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell haven't held back when showing their affection for each other, flaunting a chemistry that goes beyond a film script. I've been slightly obsessed with the status of their relationship since Sydney raved about the sparks flying between them on set, and Glen gushed about how easy it was to "pretend" fall in love with his co-star. Can they just get together already?

It's not the first time I've longed for an on-screen couple to declare their love and make us believe that a cinematic romance can happen IRL. I still get all the feels just thinking about Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey in my all-time favourite rom-com, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I wanted nothing more than to see Kate, with her gorgeous smile, and Matt, with his irresistible southern twang, ride off together into the real-life sunset.

But back to Glen and Sydney. Could they really be falling in love, or is their flirtation all just a PR stunt to sell movie tickets? While Glen split from his girlfriend Gigi Paris earlier this year, Sydney has been happily engaged to restaurant owner Jonathan Davin since 2022, so it seems the latter scenario is more likely.

Or perhaps there's another explanation for their closeness. Many of us have a "work wife" or "work husband" — that one cherished colleague who just gets you — so maybe it's no different for movie stars who spend months at a time together on set, often far away from their significant others.

However, everyone I know with a work spouse thinks that relationship should be left in the office. Gushing about the love of your work life within earshot of your actual partner is best left to movie stars, who have a whole lot more to gain by showing off their chemistry to the world.
