“Suite Life ”star Brenda Song thinks Disney fans might be 'scared' to hear her swear in“ The Last Showgirl”
"It feels weird to see you that way," Song said.
Brenda Song is back on screen — but don't expect the squeaky clean image of her childhood.
The Suite Life of Zack & Cody star plays a supporting role in Gia Coppola's The Last Showgirl, and believes that audiences might be surprised to see her play a character in the world of adult entertainment. "It’s funny because up until these last couple of years I feel like I’ve never sworn on screen,” Song told Bustle. “Coming from a Disney Channel background, I think people are almost scared. It feels weird to see you that way.”
Song constantly cusses in real life, though, and says that her community doesn't bat an eye at profanity. "I think in L.A., 'f---' is a verb. It's a noun. It is an adjective. It's natural in my language," she explained. "Since having children, I’ve had to really watch myself. People like to say that Valley Girls say ‘like.’ I think we say 'f---' as much as 'like.'"

The actress hasn't necessarily shied away from projects for grown-ups, however — she portrayed Andrew Garfield's aggressive girlfriend in The Social Network, headlined the rom-com Love Accidentally, and played key supporting roles in shows like Dads, New Girl, and Dollface.

Still, she's laid relatively low since Suite Life wrapped up in 2011, and was in a surprising location with her fiancé, Macaulay Culkin, when the call for The Last Showgirl came. "Mack was sitting there going, 'Babe' — he had never been to a Costco before we started dating — 'We’re sitting in a Costco. I’m wearing Crocs. Costco's not even open yet. You’ve tamed the beast, honey,'" she recalled the Home Alone actor saying. "And I was like, 'How dare you, sir!'"

That's when the phone rang. "And my agent calls me and she’s like, 'Hey, I have this really great script for you. Do you have a second? What are you doing?'" Song remembered. "And I was like, 'Oh, I'm sitting in the parking lot at Costco before it opens.' She goes, 'I need to get you a job.'”

Though playing a Las Vegas showgirl marks a departure from Song's previous roles, the actress said that the film's whirlwind 18-day shoot didn't allow her to find time to worry. "In this movie there was no place for it," she said. "There was something really freeing about not being worried every two seconds going, 'Oh my God, this is the least amount of clothing that I’ve ever worn in my career. I just had two kids. I feel so insecure.' And working with these women — who every day uplifted and supported me, made me feel beautiful — made me feel comfortable."
The Last Showgirl hits theaters Friday.
