David Schwimmer Shares ‘Friends’ Line Fans Still Yell at Him
Friends star David Schwimmer hasn’t escaped the show’s super fans, he told Good Morning America hosts on Tuesday as he revealed the line from the show fans still shout at him “on the street.”
“It never gets old,” Schwimmer said with a jokingly sarcastic look, “I get a lot of people shouting ‘Pivot!’ at me.” One of the show’s most beloved moments was when Schwimmer’s character Ross is moving his couch into his new apartment, with the help of friends Rachel (Jennifer Anniston) and Chandler (Matthew Perry) during the series’ fifth season.
Schwimmer told hosts Robin Roberts, Lara Spencer, and Michael Strahan that having fans shout the one-liner at him “is sometimes startling,” but also a “reminder that the series lives on,” he continued. He also shared a bit about his relationship with Friends co-star Matt LeBlanc as he discussed what it’s like to look back at the series nearly 30 years later.
“LeBlanc and I are pretty close,” Schwimmer said, “and what’s fun is we’ve got the kind of friendship, we may not talk—we all have friends like this—we may not talk for months but out of nowhere, he’ll send me a message with a clip from the show. It’s always funny to relive something we shot, what 25 years ago? Or More. And anyway, so he sent me something like, a couple of days ago that totally surprised me. I genuinely forgot what we’ve shot, but it’s a moment where he just rips my shirt off.”
He went on to describe Friends as “the gift that keeps on giving.”
“When I meet people on the street from another country and they say, ‘I just have to say, I learned English while watching your show,’ or a father stops me and says, ‘My kid was really, really ill and the one thing that kept him going in the hospital was watching Friends,’” he said. “You feel just really grateful and blessed to have done something that people find fun.”
At the mention of “fun,” Roberts couldn’t help but shout another famous line from the show at Schwimmer, “We were on a break!” to which Schwimmer responded, “It never gets old.”
