Stephen Colbert Upstages Oprah with Dance Moves at Gayle King's Birthday Party

Stephen Colbert embraced an opportunity to show off his dance moves when he attended a special birthday celebration for Gayle King over the weekend.

King’s good friend Oprah Winfrey organized the surprise event, which she noted “almost” gave King “a heart attack.” Some of those who attended later shared photos and videos from the celebration on social media—including Winfrey, who posted a clip on Instagram showing King’s moment of shock when she came upon the group of people gathered to surprise her.

King, who turns 70 on Dec. 28, also shared a collection of clips and snapshots from the party in a 15-part Instagram carousel on Sunday, Dec. 15. Winfrey is “theeeeeeee best of the best!” King wrote to caption the post. "There will be no words to properly thank her for my 70th extravaganza. I feel like she gave me the party I wanted HER to have back in January. It was a good ole fashion dance party with dancing and food and good friends. I rarely feel like the belle of the ball but I sure did that night….. still floating 🥳🥳🥳.”

King bookended her Sunday post with photos of her posing beside and hugging Winfrey, who delivered a speech at the party recognizing their 50-year friendship. “In all those years, there’s never been an argument, a disruption, or any kind of jealousy or bad feelings—in 50 years,” Winfrey could be heard marveling in a clip of her speech that King included in her post.

The CBS Mornings co-host’s post also included snapshots and videos of celebrities who attended the party to celebrate her birthday—Colbert among them. In one clip, the late night host was filmed dancing enthusiastically beside Winfrey, executing twists on the dance floor and pumping his arms as he moved to the music.

Winfrey later reshared the clip on her own Instagram page, writing that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert host “has some moves with his triple pirouette 💃🏽🕺🏻.”

Colbert joined in sharing the clip on Instagram Stories later Sunday. “DANCE PARTY AT GAYLE’S 70TH PARTY 💃🏽🕺🏻,” a text overlay included with the clip said.
