David Woiwod officially made his hosting debut alongside Monique Wright on Weekend Sunrise over the weekend, replacing Matt Doran who announced his departure last month. The TV presenter, who viewers have described as “eye candy”, previously worked as Sunrise’s resident Melbourne reporter for four years before relocating to Los Angeles and working as 7NEWS' US Bureau Chief.

Throughout his two shows on the weekend, viewers learned more about David through fun games, throwback photos, and even an interview with his parents - who revealed that he had to repeat kindergarten. Monique also put David through his paces with a lie detector test, during which he revealed his initial thoughts about his new co-host.

When asked if he had “any hesitations” about working with Monique, David brutally responded: “To be honest, I didn’t know which one you were.”

David was also asked if he had ever Googled himself, if he stole stationery from the US Bureau, or if he found himself good-looking - all of which he denied but was subsequently zapped for lying.

However, he confessed that he practised smiling in front of a mirror to prepare for his role as co-host of Weekend Sunrise.

“I think we should do this every week!” Monique remarked.

David’s Weekend Sunrise debut was clearly a hit with viewers, with many people taking to social media to praise Channel Seven’s “brilliant casting choice”.

“I liked David always as a reporter but it’s lovely to see he has a sense of humour too! Great man!” one person wrote, while another added, “Well done on your first day. I think you will be great as things settle”.

“Was worried when Matt left, but David is a perfect replacement! Mon is so great! Please put Mon and David on Monday to Friday!” a third remarked, followed by someone else who agreed, “Just looking at them, they look like a perfect match for hosting together. They will settle in the coming weeks, just as good as Mon and Matt”.

“He’s like a nerdy version of Shirvo… If that’s anything to go by - he’ll kill it,” a different user pointed out, with another writing, “He looks just like Shirvo but with glasses and dark features”.

Amongst all of the celebratory comments, a handful of people requested that David’s co-stars stop referring to him as ‘Woi’.

“Please stop calling him Woi,” a fan wrote, while another asked, “Do you have to call him ‘Woi’? David is so much nicer, even his father didn’t look impressed!”.

“It sounds tacky, I wish Sunrise would stop this surname calling,” someone else said, followed by one person who commented, “Was thinking the same, so unprofessional”.
