Sophie Turner to Play Lara Croft in ‘Tomb Raider’ Amazon Series From Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Sophie Turner is nearly set for the lead role in Amazon’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” TV series, Variety has confirmed with sources.

Sources say that the deal is not fully closed yet but is expected to close soon. Turner will play the lead role of Lara Croft, the titular tomb raider. The show was greenlit at Amazon earlier this year with Phoebe Waller-Bridge set to write and executive produce under her Amazon overall deal. It was first reported as being in development at the streamer in January 2023.

Reps for Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment.

Turner is the latest high-profile actress to take on the role of Croft, who originated in the popular “Tomb Raider” video game series. The globetrotting adventurer was previously portrayed onscreen in two films by Angelina Jolie and in another by Alicia Vikander.

Turner is best known for playing Sansa Stark in the HBO series “Game of Thrones” throughout the show’s eight-season run. She received an Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in a drama for the show in 2019. She is also known for her role as Jean Grey in the later Fox X-Men films, namely “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” Most recently, she starred in the ITV/CW miniseries “Joan” and the Max limited series “The Staircase.”

She is repped by CAA, Independent Talent Group, and Brecheen Feldman.

The “Tomb Raider” series is being developed under a pact between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios which comes via dj2’s first-look deal with the studio to develop additional “Tomb Raider” stories into series and films.

The series hails from Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios and Legendary Television. Executive producers include Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment and Michael Scheel. Amanda Greenblatt and Ryan Andolina are consulting producers under their Star Party banner. The series is produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.

Deadline first reported Turner’s casting.
